Don't EVER hit/spank/slap your dog. Not ever. I don't care if it's hard or soft, it's a big no-no.

It won't make any difference if you "punish" him for eating the cat litter, because the fact that he gets in and manages to eat what he wants to eat is reward enough for him.

I agree that the only way you can stop him really is buy removing the litter trays from places he can get to.

Perhaps you could confine him to a section of the house so that the can't get to them? Perhaps crate him when you can't watch him and when you can watch him make sure he doesn't go near the trays.

You can buy covered litter trays, maybe that would help so that the can't actually 'see' what's in the tray? It's not going to stop him from smelling it and going to investigate, though. Hmmm.....this is a tough one.

I hope someone else comes along with a more definitive answer.
