I think that as with other 'dangerous' breeds, the dogs need to be evaluated on a dog by dog basis. A lot of us have had wonderful eperiences with chows and other 'dangerous' breeds and a lot of us have had horrible experiences with 'timid' breeds. For example, my chow mix (see above) was by far one of the best dogs we ever had and chows are supposed to be mean and whatnot. But, given my experiences with cocker spaniels who are supposed to be timid (maybe I am not using the right word here, but I think you get where I am going) I have yet to meet a nice one...I always get bit or growled at and they ALWAYS attack whatever dog I am with.
Sure breeds all have specific traits, but I think in the big picture it is unfair to stereotype breeds based on those traits. Not all dogs exhibit all traits associated with their breeds...esp the mixes.
