Is the wheel free standing or attached to the cage? I would switch or buy the hamster a bigger wheel if it is easy to do. He will get better at it soon. I bought my hamsters a flat disk / saucer to run on. They loved it and would try and pile on it and when one stoped running the other flew off. I am sure it was a game to them because they did this all the time! LOL!!
