Most dogs do not go by their registered name. Most have a call name that is used every day. The registered name is more formal and is used to help registeries and identification of lines. Otherwise we'd have 1,000 dogs named 'spot' which couldn't be told apart. Registered names also often contain the kennel name in it someplace, so it's easier to know where the dog is from or what litter it is, if they are named after themes or in aphabetical order.

My dogs registered name is: Bandor's Ode to A Dream. But we call him 'Kody' Because lets face it, giving commands is a heck of a lot easier saying 'Kody, sit.' then "Bandor's Ode to a Dream, sit." :P

But in general, once the dog is registered, you cannot change the registered name.
