My my, why is it the dog always suffers... Did you leave them a note, tellling them about it, or try to contact them? I know that face to face contact isn't always easy, so maybe a note on the windshield or something.

And about the pit bull... well it sounds like the dog is always kept in the yard, which he probably views as his area. You probably were very careful going in, but he felt disrespected on the way out. It's hard to say with a dog that apears to be outside most of the time and who I don't know and haven't met.
I agree it is almost always environment, or rather it can play a huge roll on a dogs' final outlook when combined with genetics.
