. However, it is controversial among dog owners as to whether heartworm is necessary given every month as the article stated. I had worked as a vet tech part-time here in Mass. for almost five years and never saw a dog with heartworm so I don't think it is very common around here. I have never given it to my dogs in the winter some vets tell you (even mine) to keep them on it "all year round" but I don't see it as necessary. I guess just as we have had the shot topic on here and lots of people feel that a dog should have its shots every three years as oppose to every year that people are going to have different opinions of the heartworm preventatives. I still want to do more research on the whole thing. I may give it every 3 months or I may go the natural way. I had a dog who lived till 14 and never had a flea or heartworm as a matter of fact in all my years owning dogs we never had fleas
, he couldn't take the Heartworm because something in it bothered his system so we had him checked every 6 months instead. In a way it is a necessary EVIL depending on where you live and in other ways it is just EVIL to keep poinsoning your dogs system every month to "prevent". But I also think the every other or every 3 month thing is the way to go when administering heartworm.
