Police Say Bullitt County Man Was Training Dogs To Fight
By Frances Kuo - Wave 3.
(SHEPHERDSVILLE, Ky.) -- Bullitt County detectives call it one of the most disturbing cases they've ever seen. Twenty-seven-year-old Timothy Day faces charges of animal cruelty for allegedly training pit bulls for fights. Acting on tips from animal rights groups, detectives began staking out Day's home last summer. Last Friday night, they got their break. WAVE 3's Frances Kuo investigates.
Officers said they found one dog that had been so severely injured it couldn't even move on its own.
"We noticed in plain view a dog laying in the yard, covered in blood, laying next to a bowl that had bloody water in it," said Detective Robert Collins of the Bullitt County Sheriff's Department.
Detectives didn't find just one dog, but eight others -- a total of five adults and four puppies.
A makeshift treadmill and small-sized arena clued them in to an apparent dogfighting operation. "I've never seen anything like this, not at all. It's rather sickening," Collins said.
He added: "A good punishment, to me -- put him in that arena with the dogs, let the dogs take care of their own."
One dog was returned to its original owners; seven other are at the Bullitt County Animal Shelter.
A ninth dog, a one-year-old puppy, was the most severely injured.
She has bite wounds all over her body, leaving her with a limp. Alerted by authorities, veterinarian Chris Albert took the puppy in.
"I call her Phoenix," Albert said, "because she's rising from the ashes."
Phoenix is now getting a second chance at life after a difficult first. "She's been very cowering -- just 'please beat me,' when you come in the room," Albert said.
"I can't understand how anybody could get pleasure out of seeing a dog like this shredded," Albert said.
Detectives also found dog remains on Day's property. He is charged with two counts of animal cruelty, but was released on a $10,000 cash bond.
His next court appearance was set for February 7.
