No they're not considered 2nd class citizens, but of course there are some people who are just idiots (same in all countries) so racism will always be around sadly.
The outback does indeed have trees and shrubs (here's a site with some pictures http://www.redcentre.com.au/photos/gallery.html ).
Koala's are boring as heck. They do nothing but sleep all day and most people will never seen one in the wild in their entire life, they're very rare.
