Am I confused (probably ) or are you wanting to adopt a purebred adult dog? It sounds like you have lots of time, so I would invest it in raising a puppy. Adopted dogs can be disappointing if you have specific jobs in mind for them. If you have time to raise a puppy there are lots of shepard/collie/lab/whatever mixes that would be happy to learn those things. BTW, no dog is kid proof.
