Jeff and I watched the HBO special, it was very disturbing but I forced myself to watch the whole thing. I think my jaw was in permanent on-the-floor position. It amazed me that operations like that are allowed to exist and there is little control or enforcement for pharmaceutical and feed companies who experiment on animals.

When I worked for UC Davis Vet School, I understood the dogs and cats used in research there came from the Sacramento Shelter System not brokers. Also all the blood donor dogs for the teaching hospital were from the shelter too. I never saw the dogs so I cannot say how well they were taken are of.

I know the animals used in research at the teaching hospital and the vet school are all adoptable after the research project was over. I had a friend who adopted cats from HER research study and lined up homes for all the adoptable cats she could not take in. BUT this was a public academic research facility which is governed by much more strict laws and regulations than private companies such as Pet Food Companies, Pharma and Vaccine companies who use many dogs, cats, primates, horses and other animals in research.

I've heard horror stories about the pregnant horses used to produce estrogen replacement therapy for human women, does Premarin ring a bell anyone?
