Violence creates more violence. You don't have to spank a pet for being naughty. They are not children they are animals and they don't know that what they are doing is not appropriate.
Case in point... A friend of mine had problems with her dog remaining in a down/stay. She did every correction imaginable including punishing the dog. NOT GOOD! Then a wise trainer stepped in and had her put two small toys on each of her dog's front feed after she was in her down position and told to stay. When the dog moved the toy fell off her foot. The owner then punished the toy in front of the dog. BAD TOY (SMACK SMACK) BAD BAD TOY! and to this day that dog has the best down stay of them all!
What did it teach the dog??? We don't know but the violence of the toy being punished some how got through to the dog and she complied with every command given to her......The dog was never touched again in a violent manner.....
