I think dogs are very smart...just thinking about my terrier Pooch's problem-solving abilities! If he wanted something and there was some sort of obstacle he would figure out a way to get it on his own, and very quickly. For example he learned how to open the footrest on the lazy-boy recliner in one sitting, when his ball went underneath and he couldn't reach it so he figured out how to open the footrest to get at the ball. After that one time whenever the ball went underneath he immediately would pull open the footrest to get at it.
I was also just posting on another forum about my Golden... I had taught her the way to a friend's house by asking her "Where's Nomi?" whenever we were walking there and then praising her when she chose the right direction, so she quickly learned if I asked "Where's Nomi?" she should lead me to Naomi's house. She had already learned the way to her dog-friend Sasha's house on her own, and also knew the way to her favorite park (if I ever let her choose where to walk, she'd unfailingly lead me to that one park.) So one day Naomi was at my house and I wanted to show her how Ginger knew the way to her house. So we took Ginger out for a walk and I let Ginger lead the way and I asked her "Where's Nomi?" and she seemed to be unsure and sort of hanging back, not like she normally did... So I asked her again "Where's Nomi?" and instead of leading me to Naomi's house she kept looking over to Naomi as if to say "What do you mean? Naomi's right there! We don't need to go all the way to her house!"
