I would encourage them to find a more appropriate home for him, but interview potential new owners to see if they have enough time for him. Another busy household with many young children would of course, not be suitable. It would just be passing the problem on. Maybe they could find someone who has (successfully) owned a Brittany before? A very outdoor-active person, or even a hunter? I've met several Brittany Spaniels and the ones with owners who live in the country with a lot of room to run seem to be the happiest. Brittany spaniels are extremely energetic, and it's obvious the dog's owners didn't do any kind of research on the breed before getting him. You are a great person to help them catch him when he gets out.
