I just read Crossfire's article about delivering bully puppies and it was so very interesting!! I hope that it gives everyone thought before they decide to breed their precious furbabies. My daughter and I had an experience just before Christmas that almost mirrors this. My daughter has a friend who raises and shows mastiffs and had a pregnant bitch due just before Christmas. Mastiffs are not good whelpers so the owner had a date set to have a c-section and people lined up to help with the puppies. Unfortunately, mom went into labor early and no one was available to help. They were expecting 7 puppies, too many for the owner alone and the vet would have her hands busy with mom. My daughter and I went along to help (I missed my company Christmas party). Mom delivered on puppy in the waiting room of the vet's - so now the decision, should we go through the with c-section since she already delivered one naturally? It was discussed and they decided that since it could take 15 hours to deliver the puppies naturally and she might lose some in the end, they would go through with the c-section. They opened up mom and delivered 6, 7, 8, 9, oh, here's another one (10), now we're done; oh, here's another one! (11), now we're done; nope, here's one more (12). Now we are done. 12 squirming mastiff puppies - mom would never had delivered these on her own. Can you imagine 12 mastiff puppies and the owner only had one home lined up for them. She had 6 boys and 6 girls and they were all healthy! The puppies would not all have survived to be born so c-section was the best. But can you imagine, the lady had 5 adult mastiff dogs in the house already and now, 12 mastiff puppies!! That was just before Christmas - she has sold all but 2 so she is doing well.
