* If anyone has experience to share, I'd like to hear it.
* Is surgery the only way?
* Typical prognosis?
* What is done in a less severe case?
* (IS there such a thing as "less severe" with an intestinal blockage?)
* How is recovery time?

First yes, it sounds like an intestinal blockage.
They can do exploratory surgery through an endoscope and if they are lucky find the blockage in the esophagus or upper intestines and be able to grab it with pinchers. More often than not it is lodged where they only way to get it out is through surgery.
Prognosis is good as long as to much tissue hasn't died in the intestinal tract. If the stomach has turned they will usually put it back into proper location and staple to hold in place.
Recovery time is good depending on location of blockage and damage done. Much like after a spay or neuter, keep dog calm, etc.

Good luck, I hope your pup makes it through ok.
