:help2:Wag is 12 weeks and seems to be a split personality: laying like a lump on the AC vent all day and being completely mad with energy all night.

He sleeps all day, no matter how we try to entice him and all night he's bonkers. He wakes for food and walks, occasionally a swim in the river, but it's a struggle. Probably the heat and his black coat.

Last night he nipped at everyone in range and had a very amourous affair with a stuffed monkey.

He is quick to understand come and sit. Getting better with housebreaking using only the 20-minute isolation with your mess method. He paws a set of bells on the door to go out.

But his is a nipper and a hopper on my four boys. He's especially wacky and enthusiastic first thing in the morning. When the toddler comes downstairs, even though Wag has been out for a walk, had breakfast and some playtime with me, he hounds, herds and harries the toddler.

He is making us Barking Mad with this and I haven't found the right technique to stop it. He responds best to gentle reinforcement, not loud noises etc.

Anyone have a suggestion for training the little nipper?

By Lisa Suhay (The Virginian-Pilot)

There is a dividing line between “pet people” and everyone else that is sharper than the one between Republicans and Democrats. Non-pet folk shake their heads at animal daycare centers, bakeries for canines and pet massage services. They will have a field day over the fact that I am anxiously awaiting the DNA test results to determine the breeds of our new mutt.

Logical reasons to DNA test a mixed-breed include determining potential: temperament, size (will we need to add on a wing?) and health concerns the pet may face.

However, none of these entered the mix for me because our family bonds with our animals on that transcendent, unconditional level found in tight-knit clans. As the mother of four boys, the adoption of Wag the dog means integrating him into our pack, part of which is figuring out who our “new baby” takes after. And it’s fun.

The three-month-old pup in question, Wag, is a true newspaper dog. He’s black and white and today he’s read all over. His animal magnatism comes in part from the long, silky-soft, black wavy, coat. He has a honkin’ set of paws and swims with the long strokes of an Olympian. Wag weighed in at 11 pounds at 9-weeks old, 17 lbs just two weeks later.

When I walk Wag people constantly stop me to ask, “What is that?!”

Journalists have a real love-hate relationship with unanswered questions and this one turned out to be quite a challenge. When we adopted Wag from Web of Life Animal Outreach, Chesapeake, they offered the option of a DNA test by BioPet Vet, Knoxville, TN for $50 as part of a new fundraiser for the no-kill shelter. (Learn more at www.weboflifeanimaloutreach.com)

Science-schmyance! I turned the test down believing I could puzzle it out with the help of GOOGLE Images and the American Kennel Club breed reference guide. I struck out. The dog matches everything from an American black bear cub to Dorothy’s dog Toto on steroids.

I went back to Web of Life with my tail between my legs asking for the doggie DNA test. “We thought it would be a great idea to offer the tests here to get more people to be confident about adopting,” said Kelly Becker, secretary for Web of Life. “Although most people just fall in love with their animal and the tests are just icing on the cake.”

Care-a-lot Pet Supply in Virginia Beach offers the same BioPet Vet kit for $59.99. Breed Identification and Product Specialist Kathy Nemetz, who has worked for Care-a-Lot for the past 20 years, recently gave a seminar for customers on the BioPet Vet DNA test kits and benefits of canine breed testing in general.

“Guessing a breed is really not as easy as people think, even if you have the whole litter in front of you, because a dog can give birth to one litter from multiple fathers,” Nemetz explained. “SPCAs guess the breeds of the dogs they have and even they rarely make the correct diagnosis, in my opinion.” Nemetz formed this belief after adopting, Vera Wang, from an SPCA where the dog was labeled as a “Pekinese mix.” As a breed specialist, Nemetz knew the dog to be a purebred Japanese Chin and has since had the dog verified by several breeders.

“I really think these DNA tests are the way to go,” Nemetz added. “If only to know you’re not crazy when the ‘shepherd/lab mix” you got from the pound never gets bigger than 20lbs, has long hair and hates the water.”

According to Kevin Jones, chief scientific officer for BioPet Vet Lab, DNA test laboratories, Knoxville, TN, “There are more DNA differentials in just one breed of dog than in the entire human race, because humans are such an inbred species.” Jones says 92.5% of the mixed breed dog population in the USA is covered by the company’s database of 62 validated breeds. (Learn more at http://www.biopetvetlab.com)

BioPet Vet Lab (a division of EDP Biotech Corporation) is a regional clinical reference laboratory working on human genetics research and testing. Jones said in September Biotech will introduce a new test to detect bio-markers for stage 1 colon cancer in humans. Doggie DNA was supposed to be a fun sideline which, when introduced nationally in April 2008, took off beyond the company’s wildest dreams.

Now, instead of saying he's a mutt or Heinz 57, I leave people laughing telling them "He's a Cadoodle. Collie + poodle = cadoodle, according to the DNA results that just arrived.

Too bad he wasn't a Schnoodle (schnauzer-poodle). or a “Cocker’nbull pointer” (as a newshound that would come in handy).

On a recent visit to Pet Supplies Plus, Virginia Beach, I found myself on the wrong end of the question mark, asking Tanya Cowan the breed of her adorable mixed-breed puppy Ginger. "What is she?" I asked.

“She’s an American,” Cowan shot back. “Just like you and me.”

Well it's been a while since Muffin left with her new family. Seems she fit in VERY well and I think she finally found her forever home. We have a 100% take back, so if even at 15 yrs, they can't keep her, she comes back here. Doesn't look like that will ever happen though. Anyhow, with the trial period over, and me checking e-mail when ever I can, I always had a fear that she would not work out.. Guess that is what allot of foster parents think. I just didn't want her to be a pup that's been put in home after home. Well I guess that would not have happened anyway, she would of stayed here.

Yes, I will admit, I grew attatched to the little bugger. She was sweet & kind with eyes that could melt an iceburg. They can see through your soul, down deep where no-one else can go. It's nice to know they can read you so well and on a much deeper level.. She reminded me so much of Dixie in her youth... allot of Dixie in her youth I guess I should say. She was a fast learner, so much so that my 7 yr old sister started to train her, while learning the ropes of Obedience. It was nice to see how focused the two were ; a great team ! As I look back now, I see that this is why Muffin worked out so well with a family, with 2 young kids. When I saw them together, I knew Muff would hit it off really well if they adopted her. The Husband melted the moment he healed with her. You could see the look like "Ok Dad, where are we going".. The moment that struck me the deepest, were the words of their youngest who said "I wuv Muftin".. Then I knew she would not be with us after that day. It was sad, but I was beyond happy for Muffin to have finally found her place. If she was happy, I was happy.

Week to long : Got an update from Muffin's new family. It's the best news you can get ... Muffin is doing well !! They also sent us some pictures..

That is one happy puppy. She is very much loved and I was very happy to receive such wonderful news..

..............'Till next time !

River had an absolutely full on day today - we went to the beach this morning, were home for a bit then around to my sister's for lunch and out to the park with Brandi and Zeta.

Then we went straight to meet up with a friend and her dog for some obedience training practice. Since Riv had a pretty full on day I wasn't expecting all that much from him.

He was teethered while my friend run her dog through a UD round and by the time she finished River couldn't wait to do something himself.

We did a Novice run through which means offlead heeling and it was absolutely mind blowing - the best heelwork I've ever seen him do, he was just about bouncing through it, nailed all his positions (and I didn't bend down on any of my drop signals) and he didn't get lost on the outside turn of the figure 8 :Clapping: Couldn't be prouder of him!!

We do need to work on the offlead stand for exam - he's not sure what to expect being offlead so will go back to teaching this with me closer in until he gets his confidence back up with it again.

Recall was great and even managed to do a COP as well :D

Was an absolutely brilliant session!

River and I have been working particularly hard over the last month to get my drop signal a LOT smaller than what it was and also working on his chane of positions (where I leave him in a stand and go to the front of him and have him drop when I signal) and also getting him to drop on voice only.

Not sure if he was overthinking it or just being lazy but he decided that a smaller signal means a smaller drop so he was only going half way down on them :Hysterica

And though he used to do the change of positions really well lately he's been looking at me as though I've grown 2 heads when I ask him to do it.

Last night though we had a major breakthrough and he was not only dropping on a smaller signal and doing the COP for me but he was doing them fast. Even managed a few on verbal command only as well.

Anyway tonight I thought we'd try again just in case it was a one off thing and it seems he can now drop but can't stand  I got caught out big time by focusing on this drop stuff and not rewarding his stands enough. It was pretty funny actually trying to get him off the ground, he was adamant I was only going to ask him to drop so he was going to stay there until he got paid :o

I did manage to get him switched back on and got the stands I was after as well as the drops :Pup:

He sure does keep me on my toes but it's the best part about working with him, I never really know what he's going to throw at me next!

I'm sorry but toy dogs are different than larger dogs. Toy dogs are scared of your feet! OMG, how long do you think it took me to figure that one out. Also our toy is scared of clickers...when was the last time you saw a large dog scared of clickers and people's feet.

So we started taking shaping seriously and bingo, we have a winner. He finally got it and will plop his butt down where ever he is when given the command, no traveling, no scooting, nothing and he holds his sit until the next command....perfect.

Actually I have to give a lot of credit to my 3 yr old daughter Sam, she was more diligent about shaping the sit and Hank is absolutely loving her for it. It amazes me how children are natural born shapers, no kidding, it's so natural for her to lure and shape it's mind boggling.

Now for our next tricks....over, down and heel.

Well Muff has been with us since Jan. 2nd. It's been a whirle wind of an experiance. I think she may very well be one of the wildest puppies we've had in a long time lol. She is so much fun though !! Everyone is getting attached, and I know it will be very hard to give her up when we find the right home. I was going to get her in for a Spay at 4 months, but decided that I will wait until she turns 6 months. We have only had 1 true interest in her in tha last month. They have fostered and rescued as well and really wanted to add a Lab . While retired, I gave them a shot since I know some many can handle pups, depending on the situation and persons. Their app. was great and they knew / had experiance with Labs. I felt comfortable and we went through with a home check. Muff did get to go along and meet them as well. She took to them , as they did to her. It was love at first site ! After the check and a bit of chit-chat, I told them to think about it and let me know what they think. Sadly, it did not work out. We both understand that Muff 's future is far more important to "how soon", but we both agree'd that we had wished it would of worked out. They felt that they would not be able to give her what she need, excercise wise, and were worried about her and their stairs. They began to talk about how they are thinking that an older dog maybe the right way to go. I told them that I understand and felt that they have good judgement. They will make a great home for a a lucky dog out there. I am keeping an eye out for them, incase I come across an older Labbie in need of a home. Never know though, if they are still looking, and we still have Muff when she is older, I may contact them again and try for a meet up again. Only time will tell.

Untill then, Muff is more the welcome here . We are having fun and so are the rest of the crew. Bella has her self a little sister and they love eachother. We know we can't keep her perm. but.... well, who knows what the future will bring :)

'Till next time .....
I'm very close to having enough money for my trip to Tanzania this September. I have all my flights booked too, which is an amazing feeling. :Pup: It's so close, yet so far. Can't September get here any faster? :p

Check out where I'll be...
After flying from Australia to Dubai and then to Nairobi, I end up at Kilimanjaro International Airport
Then I am driven to Arusha and on to the project (which I haven't got any info on just yet. Except it's called Soko Village.
After the project we head to the Ngorongoro Crater.
Looks like fun, eh? ;) Don't you wish you were coming with me? I wish you were coming too. To anyone who hasn't traveled overseas yet....DO IT. It'll change your life forever!

Some people just have no common sense whatsoever. I suppose since those people cannot seem to pull themselves out of the quagmire they've walked into that they can just serve as a warning to others tredding the same path.

My friend just happens to be one of those people (we'll call her S.).

A couple of weeks ago, she came to school and confided in me and our mutal friend, Britt, that she was pregnant.

This friend of mine is seventeen years old, a senior in highschool, living at home with her parents, her brother, his wife, and soon to be four kids all under the age of three. She lets passion rule her reasoning all of the time and will believe anything that any guy tells her. Because of her life choices, she has found herself kicked out of the school and will not be walking down the aisle with us when we graduate. Neither will the baby's father.

She has always been emotionally insecure and trys so hard to get acceptance from the guys that she looses site of what she really wants. IMO, if she had went to a public school instead of the Christian school I attend, she probably would have ended up little more than a slut.

That father of this baby is a mutal friend (just turned seventeen - we'll call him C.). I think reality just gave him a good punch in the face and he really wants to try to shape up and be in this child's life. His own dad was never a part of his life, throughout his childhood his dad was on the run from the cops, and his dad currently is heavily involved in gang related things.

Now for the real kicker. Early on in my two friends' relationship, C. cheated on S. She never got over it, but because she wanted desperately to feel needed she stuck with him. She constantly felt like she was walking on eggshells around him because all he had to do was threaten that he would leave her and she would do anything he said.

Now that S. is pregnant, she is holding it over C's head and is threatening to never let him see the child again because, "She can, she will, and it is her right to. All of this is his fault and she can lash out at anyone she wants to."
S. has come out and told me that she is doing it for revenge on C. and she is willing to keep him out of their baby's life just so she can get the emotional gratification of watching him squirm.
Seeing as how I've been friends with C as long as her and I hear both sides of the story, I find it hard to be sympathetic. Especially when C is willing to own up to his mistakes and she lashes out at everyone and refuses to forgive, go on with her life, and stop bieng a bitch about it all.

I'm incensed at S. because of her extreame pettiness and stupidity. I'm still her friend and I am always going to be there for her, but I am through holding her hand. For the three years I have known her I have always given my opinion and advice on the situations she finds herself tangled in and she always throws it away. She gets burnt, comes crying to Britt and me, and after she listens to us scold and comfort her, she puts herself right back into the same situation. I am done with her. No more advice from me, unless she is going to listen and follow through with it.

Oh, and the reason she is pregnant in the first place? Apparently, you cannot have a dating relationship with someone without sleeping with him. And then, for fear of loosing the one you are dating, you have sex without protection because "that is the way he likes it". And never mind all of the false scares, the scolding from friends, and the promises of, "I won't do it again." I mean, does it take a rocket scienctist to figure out that having sex without protection (and even at times with protection) that you are going to get pregnant?

And now that she is pregnant, she wants nothing to do with the person she so desperately wanted to keep and planned on marrying.

Some people need a 20lb hammer to the head to wake up. The sad thing is, this baby still hasn't woken her up. She's going to be craving acceptance and security from a male even more now, and do you realize how vunrable that will make her as a single teenage mom? There goes her highschool education, there goes her college degree, there goes her young adult hood.

I wish there had been a way I could have woken her up sooner, but short of screaming at her and loosing her completely, I don't think it will ever happen.
Some part of me feels like that I've failed her as a friend, that I saw what she was doing and I didn't try to stop her. I feel that if I had taken her aside when the snowball first started rolling and screamed at her and made her hate me, I would have woken her up and helped prevent all of these responsibilities that are now falling on her shoulders.

People are so stupid.

I've officially renamed Christmas, Santamas, since it's really about the worship of Santa Claus. Fits in nicely with my new religion 'Kringlism', don'tcha think? :Hysterica

Santamas was pretty good, except for two small but annoying exceptions. My cousin's children. They have got to be, especially his daughter, the rudest most objectionable children I've ever met.
At one point they went around demanding everyone give them the toys they got out of the crackers and the girl (I'll not name them, I'm a nice person after all ), who'd never met this particular guest in her entire life, yelled across the table "Oi! You! Whathisname! Give me your toy!!"
Now this girl is not a toddler, she's 8 years old. Her brother is 7 and only slightly less rude. He constantly got under the Santamas trees taking out presents and asking if they were his. I'd expect that of a 4 or 5yr old. Not a 7yr old. They were just so rude all 'round. Even my mother, who can see the good side of just about any child, couldn't stand either of them.

Ok...that's my rant over.
Other than that, it was pretty good. Lots of family and friends. Good food...plenty of seafood, all of it helped forget what a nightmare Santamas eve was at work. I work in a seafood shop and prawns (and other seafood) are #1 at this time of year in Australia. So I started work at 5am and didn't finish until around 12pm. Then I went back at 7.30pm. It was a very long day for us all.

Wow, this is the longest blog I've ever written.

I'm all booked in for my Tanzania trip now and have my first pay that will go towards my savings for it. WooHoo! And that guy I met over there is still keeping in touch with me. Yay! :Whistleda

And even better news...I'm doing a traineeship in this new job, which means I get a certificate at the end (a very good one too) with a great reference that will give me a great advantage when finding another job after this one. Which means that 2009 (yes, it's a long time away) is Cass' year of the dog. That's right folks, Cass is definately getting a new dog then. I think I'm more excited about that than I am anything else. :Hysterica No one can say I'm not a true dog person. :p

New place, new job, new life. I hope everyone had a great holiday too.

First day at my new job was not a disaster, but it was horrible nonetheless.
Because it's a shop, the worst thing was the fact that I don't know the prices of anything yet. It makes serving customers incredibly terrifying for someone who's as socially phobic as I am.
I pretty much hid around the back busying myself with whatever I could find and what no one else wanted to do.
I did do admin work in the morning before I went to the shop, though and I loved that. I'm far better suited to admin work.

There is a man coming today to talk to me about doing a traineeship and I'm going to try to get one in admin. Or at least one that focuses heavily on admin. I'll still be working at the shop, but doing a traineeship as I go and hopefully the admin traineeship means I'll do more paper work and less serving customers. *shudders*
All of you who go into restaurants, please be kind to the people serving, especially if they seem nervous or new. :)
She loved smelling the cold air while prancing all over the door interior. After we got home, she jumped out and took me for a walk. After a brief "marking" of the neighbors yard, she started running. I thought, OK, I'll run...she will get tired....NOT That darn dog kept running (she was on-leash), we ran for 2 blocks and I had to stop. The air is so cold, my lungs started hurting, plus I'm out of shape and cannot run too much. THen she tuned to me and gave the look. You know, the aren't you coming look....talk about spredding it on thick. This old girl has cancer, arthritis, is wasting, but yet she can out run me....go figure!

So we load everyone in the car explaining to Samantha that she needs to be quite and sit nice at the vet's office. She agreed to be good and was practicing her inside voice the whole way there, it was so cute seeing her whisper to herself "I being quiet at doctors and sit nice at doctors". So we go to the vets, get out of the car, thus far uneventful. We go inside and she announces to the whole office in her loudest voice "I'm here!" *hide under table*. They know us by now so the tech just says..."Montana's here" in her normal cheerful voice and I'm sure in back of her mind she is saying, "and that loud little girl is here too, yippie!" LOL

Anyways she was good, as good as a 3 yr old could be. With a couple hushes here, a couple shushes there, we got through it with minimal interruptions. Next time we will bring toys...how the heck did I make it out of the house without toys......

As I was calling the vet to get an appointment, she actually wanted to play with me. It's not often that she wants to play so I entertained the idea and we chased each other around the patio. It was nice to see her happy in light of all her tumor growth. You'd think she would be miserable, but no, not Montana....happy dog with a happy tail.

This morning we took Montana in for a consult with the traditional general veterinarian we like in town. He had an opening so we decided to take it. The holistic vet has moved and is over and hour away so we passed, it's too bad because I really like her.

So our local vet gave us 2 options, we can put Montana to sleep once she gets miserable or we can surgically remove her tumor. He wants to do a full blood panel ($125) and x-rays to see if the tumor is really in her lungs as we suspect. If we decide on surgery, our vet offered to do it or recommend a surgeon with a 1hr radius of our town. He says there are 3 hospital he recommends. Since the tumor is highly vascularized and she could loose a lot of blood during tumor removal, he hinted that a board certified surgeon would be best. I'm hesitant to do surgery because of her age but yet again she is playful, full of energy and her disposition is bright and cheery. So we are not sure yet, but we will be thinking it over for the next week or so.

In the mean time we will keep you posted on her progress and what we decide. Please keep Montana in your thoughts, she is such a great dog, I hate the idea of loosing her so close the Christmas.

I caught her trying to 'yank' Hanks leash...this is getting to be a battle of wills but I'm determined to help Samantha walk her dogs as she is determined to help. She handled the leashes well, did not drop them once. She did not offer to pick up the poo like she usually does but I did not mind, just taken back a little. Tomorrow's a new day ;)
