No. 1 Problem in Dogs?

I was wondering, what do you think is the most common problem people have with their dogs? From hanging around dog forums I would say that it's housebreaking. What do you guys think?

I think the most common problem is teaching a dog to come when called. Getting a dog reliable with recall can be difficult for a lot of people.

Hello,

When I was training. I would say the top three were barking, housebreaking, and lack of recall.

Some other top problems were guarding behaviors (ie food dish, toys and overzealous house guarding), dominance issues within family basically a lack of leadership from the people, dog aggression etc.

I too believe that recall and barking are the top problems. I'm having a hard time with those myself at the moment.

IMO, it is hard to label one thing as the most "common" problem. More often than not, if one thing is not up to par then a lot of other things aren't up to par either. LOL

And add jumping up to the list. Every other dog I meet wants to clobber me and say hello to my face. (Chloe included...she is so BAD about jumping!)

A couple of reasons many dogs end up in shelters is because they chew things they are supposed to and house breaking.

Don't think it's the most common one but think a lot of people struggle with loose lead walking too - which in turn means dogs aren't exercised so then become bored - destructive, barking etc.

I would agree, in fact I think this is one of the most common problems by far - the number of dogs I see that can't walk nicely on the leash, as well as the number I see at obedience. I know many trainers who see it in most clients dogs too. You just need to look at the sheer number of dogs that have to be walked on head collars, no pull harnesses etc because they haven't been taught how to walk on a loose leash.

I would also say that aggression, both human and dog to dog, is another unfortunately common problem.

Most dogs I come across just in daily interactions would not have reliable recall, but I think quite a few of those owners don't see it as that big a problem. I seem to come across a lot of people who don't really care if their dog comes when called or not.

I have to say that I have noticed two major problems that I have had with training my dogs. #1 training not to bark and #2 house training. I know that the barking sometimes depends on the breed but I also believe that house training has to do with it also.
