Ripped Claws Off on Plane
Our Basenji is very nervous and trys to claw his way out of his cage when in cargo during a flight. We absolutely want him with us when we go on our holidays and its too far to drive. He has bloodied his paws and has severely damaged/lost two claws which took a month to heal. Sedatives do not work on him. We have put on doggie boots and taped them to his leg but he worked them off during the flight. Does anyone have any suggestions. Thank you

No way would I put my dog through that just because I wanted him to be with me. That would be putting my wishes, not needs ahead of his welfare. That is just too stressful and awful. I'd get a house sitter or use a good boarding kennel.

You CAN take a dog as carry on IF the crate/carrier fits under the seat in front of you. I know of someone that took a puppy on the plane with them. If you get a soft carrier or one that is flatter it will fit under the seat. Obviously the dog would have to lay down during the flight. I know basenjis are smaller dogs...so maybe finding a carrier that fits under the seat on the plane would be something to look into. Check with your airline company to see which ones allow dogs on the plane...and see what the size requirements are for the carrier.
Otherwise I'd find a friend or kennel the dog. |

Unleash The Possibilities

A Basenji is way to big for travel in the cabin. In additon to fitting under the seat, the carrier has to allow the dog to stand up and turn around comfortably. The pet counts as a carry-ons AND you pay an excess baggage fee on top of that. That's American's policy, anyway. Boy, I wish I was able to stand up and turn around comfortably on the airplane!
