Yorkies with wild baby bird!

yesterday we had some freinds over for a tri-tip dinner and while we were inside eating, a wild baby bird hopped right in the house. Azrael got VERY excited and wanted to check it out, but Zada just wagged her nub and walked away. I was afraid that Azrael may hurt it so my husband picked it up and took it outside, but when it tried to fly it only got about 8 feet and hit the fence. It ran down the fence line and hid behind a bush. We watched to see if it had a mom to care for it and in about 30 seconds we saw two small black birds come down and walk all over the yard till they found the baby, then they just seemed to walk around pecking at the grass. Awhile later I slid the screen open for the girls and Azrael ran out sniffing everywhere looking for the bird, and she found it. I decided to let her check it out because I just couldn't keep them inside all the time and that baby can't fly very well, so I knew it would be in our yard till it could. She was so timid with the little bird. She would get just so close, then stretch her body and neck out really far to smell it, but would jerk back each time it moved. She finally lost interest and left it alone. I was so proud of her for not hurting it.

oh my gosh I had a similar incident this morning with Chloe! There was a small bird trapped in our screen room, when I went to help it out Chloe came running out and picked it up in her mouth! I thought for sure it was done for, (stupid me for not closing the door ) I yelled DROP! and she did! Then I ran over to check on it, and Chloe went for it again. I yelled BACK (that's what we use when the door is open and we don't want her to go out) and she backed up! I picked up the scared to death bird and set it on the deck rail, and watched it fly away. Out of all the times I least expected her to obey me she actually did. I'm positive she never intended on killing it ,for godness sakes it was in her mouth But she didn't bite hard. I'm so relieved!
Just goes to show how domesticated our dogs really are.

That is so awesome!!

I have budgies and cockatiels. T, our 2 year old dobie rescue, has "gotten" 2 of the budgies. Yes, both our fault. But he's not killed them.

First time was after 3 weeks with his, he put his paw on one so he could smell it. That was all he did.

The second time was a few weeks ago when my daughter had her budgie downstairs with her (a huge no-no that we've corrected) and my hubby was playing ball with T. T just saw "movement" and thought "ball", but it was the bird on the ground. He had already dropped the bird when I yelled "drop it" and backed up when I told him to.

He now knows the birds aren't allowed around him and if one flies into the room where we are, he'll come tell me, so I can remove it back to the bird area.

Yes, dogs are very domesticated. But that doesn't stop them from wanting to chase the rabbits in the back yard!

That is adorable

You must have been so proud! I'm not sure if Gizmo would be that gentle, but I'd like to think he would. He does the same streach out and straining when it's something new that he's not too sure of.

Yay for Azarel!

Wish I could say my dog was the same. She's pretty obedient too, but not when it came to today. We've been having a starling problem with a nest in our cieling (we rent, and office won't remove it), and today a baby bird found it's way by our furnace. (dropped through the cieling) I went to get it out, had it in my hands, and it started to chirp and flutter and made it's way to the ground. Misty's never hurt an animal before, but since I have started partly feeding her raw (kibble morning, raw at night) I guess she had a taste for the bird. Before I knew it she had it in her mouth and wouldn't let go. So, I got it from her after a few seconds, and the bird was squealing, I put it in a box and it seemed fine. I went to let it go outback, and it hopped so far, and then fell to it's side. But then got up and hopped again. God I hope it's ok. I never imagined her doing such a thing. Just thought I'd share my story... so it's true that a dog is never, truely, "demesticated".

Some dogs have hearding instincts and some have hunting. It's all in the scheme of things, so don't worry that she has that beautiful prey drive. You should see my Yorkies try and get those darn gophers out of their holes though.

lol, that sounds pretty amusing to watch. (the gophers)

Misty is a Lhasa Apso, so somewhere in the breed's genetics, isn't there terrier? I am guessing that's where it came from, as she went after another one that came down. (this problem is really annoying... we've almost got it cleared though) I have just never seen her like this before, as I have my chinchillas around her a lot. (not on her level though, I carry them around, but she pays them no mind) I don't think I trust her now though (around the chinchillas)... it's good to know. Maybe she just has a taste for bird...lol!

A-w-w-w-w....That was pretty cute. (from our standpoint of course) LOL. It's interesting though, that she didn't continue to show much interest. Lucky for the bird. Cute little story.
