Harness

Has anyone used a harness w/ their dog? Not like a gentle leader, just a walking harness. Any opnions are welcome

When we first got Abby we used a harness with her for walks, but she didn't like the feeling it placed around her chest. She would sometimes make herself collapse on her side and she would refuse to keep walking. Mind you, Abby is a Chihuahua with not 'that' much fur - that, and her size could make a difference to the way she reacted to the harness.

I don't use harnesses with my dogs, but I'd always suggest using them on small breeds, simply because of the damage a collar could do to their wee necks.
Although, saying that, I've seen quite a few people with medium-giant breeds use harnesses and had success with them.

I like using a harness in outdoor situation like hiking and swimming. Shelby is medium size and has little problem having it on.

I have used harnesses. I use them when I take the dogs for a run, and even when walking because they are such horrible pullers So I don't want them to damage their necks. BUT, I wouldn't recommend a harness for a dog that's a puller, unless you know how to properly train your dog to walk nicely on a leash.

I like using harnesses at times because I feel like I have more control of my dogs. If I have to ever pull them away from a situation, I'd rather grab ahold of their harness and pull, instead of yanking them by the neck via the collar.

I have small dogs, and of course I use harness, but I make them myself. I made them some ultra suede ones that are for everyday, and I also made them vest and dress harnesses.

Small dogs here, too. I use harnesses because it is more comfortable for them. I also think that the ability to grab them by their harness is much better than their collar if I need to get ahold of them in a hurry.

i use a front-clip sense-ation (though i think the easy-walk ones are better) harness on mushroom sometimes. he can be a puller, and it worked reasonably well.

I use harnesses, of course. There is a nice one that came with a doggie seatbelt that I use if I forget to put one on after getting into the car.

The nylon types are common but I'd love some pointers to ultra-suede, leather, canvas, etc.

I have two mini schnauzers and a mini poodle. We travel alot and they use harnass'. I think they are much better because you don't have to worry about them slipping out of them.

I trained Yorkie Cozy on a harness. Now she wears a collar for just hanging around at restaurants, going to the bank, etc. but she wears a harness if she is going to be actively running, hunting, playing - so she doesn't hurt her neck.

I kind of like harnesses because you can't use collar corrections with them. You have to train with your brain.

I used a haarness for Liberty and I really think it works well. It really does depend on the dog. Bailey pulls nonstop on a regular harness so I use a head harness when I walk him. So it depends on the dog.

Yeah same here. If I need to get the dogs out of a situation (or someone in my family does) it's nice to not need to pull on something on the dog's neck or head. Harnesses on a dog that pulls isn't always fun, but it's easier for me than a collar and doean't scare away people (like a head harness does).

I like to use a harness cause when you have to pull back on your dog, it won't choke 'em.
