Dog chewing own ears

HI everyone,

We have an 8 month old cocker spaniel named Riley. We have noticed him chewing on his own ears off and on. He started a month or so ago, but stopped after a week and has now been doing it again lately. Any thoughts on why he may be doing this? Thanks!

Check his ears. See if they are clear of debree and dirty wax. He could have an ear infection. I would call your vet and see what kind of advise they could offer or maybe take him in.

My old Cocker Spaniel used to chew on his ears when he hadn't been groomed, but just the hair when it was long.
Is he chewing the actual ear or just the hair? Maybe he just needs a trim.

Thank you both for replying. He actually went in yesterday morning and was groomed. He was still chewing on them in the evening. We did check his ears for wax and they were clean. It just seems to be his hair, but I can't tell for sure.

If your positive it isn't a medical issue, then there's a bad tasting product called Bitter Apple that you can apply to his ears to deter him from chewing on them.

Are you supplying him with appropriate things to chew on like Kongs and Nylabones? And how much exercise is he getting?
