Herding

Is it possible to train a almost 2 year old sheltie to herd?. Naturally Casey already has that herding instinct since he uses it on Cats and dogs. Im trying to come up with ways for him to use up his energy because he sure has tons i don't think agility wears him out enough LOL once he gets going he REALLY gets going. He may take a break then he's up and moving again .

In the near future im thinking about getting a couple of ducks for Casey if i can get him to herd them into their little shed that hubby will built for them. After all gotta keep those darn coyotes away from those duckies!!...AND if im brave enough and Casey does well on ducks we'll probably end up with a sheep for him, but of course im going to have to do alot of research on how to care for these animals which i hear they can be alot of work. But all these are just IF's and alittle bit of dreaming, we'll probably just stick with ducks if anything.

It is amazing what they have in them. Do you have a professional around you that can do an HIC ????

Maybe find a herding club in your area? My GSD is 9 and he's just beginning to "learn" the rules of herding. We started because he has that natural instinct, and seems to love it.

Good Luck!

It's deffinitly possible to teach your sheltie how to herd

She already has the instinct, once you get her out there with a professional trainer and apply cues, she'll be a great herding dog. And I'm sure she'll love doing it too.

Just check out some herding clubs in your area if there are any, I'm sure you'll be able to find at least one trainer with experience in herding that would be more than happy to work with you and your dog.
