my dog's acting funny....
my dog, buddy - is a 10 year old nutered male chi/terrier mix, - and he's been acting funny latly. perhaps sexual frustration? (though he's fixed..) he seems to be very "horny", humping random items, walking differently - i am very concerned, is this normal, what should i do?

Two questions for you.....
Has a new pet, child, adult or object such a furniture or something of that nature been brought into the home? When was Buddy's last visit to the vet? |

Typically neutered males of Buddy's age don't display this type of behavior suddenly without reason, possibly a case of displaced aggression or stress but not something that first comes to mind and would be pretty rare.
Is Buddy on any current medications? There are some reports of hypothyroidism causing behavioral changes of this nature and corticosteroids (such as prednisone) do sometimes induce behavioral changes in dogs. It would also be worth testing to see what the testosterone levels are, or if that is unequivocal to do a human chorionic gonadotropin challenge test. If the testosterone levels are normal, hypothyroidism is not present and Buddy isn't on any current medications that may be causing the problem then I'd begin to look at a possible irritation of the genital area of some sort or if all else fails it is possible although not common that it may be due to displaced aggression or stress. A trip to the vet is really needed. jmo |
