Meet and greet arghhhhh

Hi all.
Harleys training is coming along soooooooo well, I am very proud. But there is still one thing, that no matter how hard we try, he can not overcome the meet and greet.
He can down stay for along time, even when kids are running, or dogs barking. Huge success. But when it comes the time for people wanting to pet him, all bets are off.
I keep on placing him back down, but no luck. He tries so hard, he sits with his butt wiggling, But this is one task he is having a very hard time overcoming.
Is their anything I should be doing differently..
Please help, have our first prenovice jan 14th...

Do you mean he's jumping up at people or just breaking the down stay???

What happens if you (or whoever it is that is going to greet him) turns their back on him and ignores him completely when he gets up? Does he get back down??

Doing it this way worked for River - at first it takes them a little while to figure out what's going on but if Harley eventually works out that down means pats it shouldn't take him too long. I hope I've understood your question properly!!

I put him at a sit stay if someone wants to see him, once in awhile he will jump in the air, not on the person. But he breaks it, gets too excited, forgets everything...
We have another class today. hopefully his trainers might be able to show me how to curb.
This is something we have been working on so hard, and he does not get it

Darby breaks when people get within about 1.5 yards. He gets all excited and goes up to them to greet them. He never jumps on people unless invited, he just waits for pets/hugs. If they turn their back or move backwards he continues towards them unless stopped and moves to their front for greeting.

That is almost exactly what Sadie does! She is fine with distractions as long as those distractions aren't paying any attention to her. We can be walking through the mall and behave wonderfully, but if someone stops to pet her, she "boings" in one place, whines, and won't stay still! If I tell her to sit she'll sit, but she'll bounce right back up.
There are exceptions to this rule (like little kids or when we were at the state fair. She behaved well then), but it is normally the same thing over and over.

I have tried everything I can think of and nothing seems to be working. Let me know what you find out!

i have the same problem with luce. it made passing our cgc test... interesting lol. having really fantastic treats and somebody who is willing to come up and completely ignore the dog while you shove treats down her throat for keeping her bum on the ground is what we did with luce. if she broke her sit, the person turned her back and went away. breaking the sit = person leaves. no petting of dogs who are not sitting.

i'm not strict with it, so she's a nutcase, but it's one of those things that's not that important to me, so i let it slide. personal preference. of course, i'd really appreciate if she wouldn't jump up in people's faces when the bend down to pet her and bonk them in the nose with her really thick skull

If Sadie was my dog I wouldn't mind half so much. Actually, I think it is rather cute, although it does tend to scare people off. LOL A 65lb Lab jumping in place while whining....yep, she's a nutcase!
But seeing as how she is a seeing eye dog in training...I can't really tolorate it. Well keep trying though.

You mean that they are NOT supposed to bark furiously and plow into people and cover them in mud??? Huh...interesting.

Been working on this for a year with Shamous. He just doesn't get it. I think it's the Shepard in him. He barks like a freak, I have to tell people to PLEASE ignore him, don't look at him or pet him, until he calms down. Which is immediately after he realizes they are not going to kill him or me. Usually after I have acknowleged the person. Then he sniffs around. I still instruct guests to still ignore. Once he's done with his sniffing, he will ususally sit and lick a hand. Then I tell whom ever ok, go ahead and say hello to him , other wise he will will pester you until you do.
