Ball Fetching

The may sound silly, but what have you found is the best way to train a dog to fetch? My dog has catches ball once in great while.

We have an obsessive fetcher..we want to train him to NOT fetch all day long. I can't really give you tips as he trained himself when he was a puppy 10 years ago. He fetches all the time, throw something once and hes at it! lol. I take him to the dog park to burn his energy, everyone there LOVES him.and they all have a blast throwing the balls for him, and don't seem to understand why I am so annoyed with it. (I have lived with his fetching for 10 years!!). The only time he doesn't fetch is when hes eating or sleeping.

This is what we did with gracie. She had no intrest at all in toys when we got her. When she would play with the toy or have it in her mouth at all I would give lots of praise and give treats. Eventually she loved to play with toys and now she will fetch all day long. It just takes time. Try all different types of toys and see if you can find your dogs favorite and work from there. Gracie doesn't like tennis balls or any hard ball she likes squeeky toys and plush toys.
