Sneaky sit-stays
I've run into an issue with my pup and his training...
He's great on his down-stays, he can go for almost 2 minutes now, but his sit-stays need some work.. He knows the basics of it. When I give him a hand command or start off on my right foot and walk away from him, he is to stay put. And up until recently he was doing quite well. My problem is that halfway through the sit-stay, he will pop up. The SECOND he seems me looking at him when he's standing, he goes right back down into a sit-stay. Normally that's ok with me for a pet, but I want to compete with him in obedience, and that is unacceptable in the ring. (They can't stand up or lay down during a sit-stay) So my question is, how do I go about working this problem out? |

Duke does the same, only with any type of stay. I'll tell him to stay when I'm leaving the room, and about a minute after I've been out of sight, I can hear him get up. I'll start to walk back, and as soon as he realizes I'm coming, he bolts to get back to where he was before I see him.
I agree with sheltiepups, I'd start over. You don't have to go all the way back to the beginning basics of sit-stays, maybe just work on shorter intervals, and gradually increase the time he stays. You could also put him in a sit-stay, turn and walk with your back facing him, and then turn back after a few steps. After you turn to look at him, praise, but have him keep holding the sit-stay. After praising from a distance, walk to him, release, and praise again. (I have never tried this, so I can't say what the results would be if you do use this method.) Hope he perfects those sit-stays soon! |
