Finally - he learned drop it!

Just a little brag here, if I may..... I have been trying to get Zuki to drop his ball in my hand with no success for months - today he finally got it!!!(YAY)
He also willingly dropped a tissue he stole from the garbage tonight!
Also, drumroll please - yesterday I took him to Countrymax and my oh-so-shy boy took a cookie from the cashiers hand! I just about fell over!
It's so great when they finally get something you've been working so hard on. Just had to share, I am so proud of him today!

Congratulations!! One of my dogs is nearly 11 years old and he still won't 'drop it', he's a stubborn little doggie! He has such strong jaws too, it's no use trying to get a ball out of his mouth! Abby on the otherhand is quite good with drop it.

He's about 11 months we think, almost a year. I actually didn't use treats for this - they weren't working. He is a freak about tennis balls, always has one in his mouth, or under his chin if he's sleeping. So for a reward I just gave it back to him. First I started getting him to trade me for a different ball, just to get him to release it at all. It took forever! I just made sure he always got it back, so he would learn it wasn't a big deal to give it up. He will literally carry his ball at all times, sets it down by his bowl when he's eating or drinking etc. Sometimes he carries one in his mouth and tries to shuffle around with another between his feet! It's pretty funny.

Rewards aren't limited to treats

You would make an excellent positive reinforcement trainer. It takes some thinking outside the box and that sort of creativity to make certain things work.
