We have a dog who is now 6 years old. He has been housebroken since we pretty much got him. No problems. About 2 months ago he stopped going outside and started going in the house. Since he was crate trained and climbs in his pen whenever he sleeps or gets a bone we decided to try rehousebreaking him. We thought we had the problem fixed and let him have free run again. Well 2 days he was fine 3rd day went to the bath room in the house again. So back to square one. Now this morning he was out for a while after breakfast I put him back in his pen and ran out to the store. When I got back he had gone to the bathroom in his pen. This is something he has never done before. I really at a loss as to what to do with him. He is a great dog and we have never had any problems with him. Help????

Sorry should have posted this before. He has been to the vet and I was told to keep working with him. It's a housebreaking issue. They ran blood test and came back with nothing. Also he is doing number 2 lol in the house. Couldn't think of the work I wanted.

ahhh...
hmmm...well, then it may be an attachment issue. You said he went in his pen after you went to the store. Some dogs will act out in different ways...there are ways to calm a dog down when you leave. Leave a radio on, with a talk radio station on. Try a clock that has a loud ticking noise, and most of all, reward him when he does it right. It is really odd that he has never had problems before. And, now that he is 6, it points to something other than an attachment problems. But, I can't think of anything else that it might be. |

Our full grown min pins (7 and 9) were amazing about telling us when they had to go out. Untill I changed jobs. There was ALWAYS someone home to let them out on a regular basis, even after the job change, but they didnt like it, so it was their way of acting out.
so my point in that was- has anybodys schedual in the house changed? Like Quincy said its an attachment thing. Some dogs the smallest thing will trigger it. |

I've been a stay at home mom for 13 years. My kids have been in school since Sept. and hubby has been working the same hours since we meet. My son lets them out in the morning first thing, I let them out during the day and my daughter lets them out at night. Same thing since we moved here 4 years ago. They have even gone out the same door into the same area which is cleaned everyday for 4 years. I am really really stumped here.

Well you say your dog is a male so if he is not fixed, that might be the problem. But dogs can have bladder infections that cause them to loose controll of their bladder
I do know that my mom owned a poodle and we had her for 5 years. Well when she was 5 we bought a puppy golden retriever that she hated. After a couple months she begain useing the restroom in the house, my mom would let her outside, then she would come back in and use the restroom in the house. We eventually got to the point where we gave her back to my grandmother. After we gave her to my grandma she hardly ever used the restroom in the house. Maybe it is a form of resentment of some sort. Have you intorduced a new dog to the family that might be the cause of this? |

I wish that was it. No one new has come in since we moved here 4 years ago. He is not urinating in the house. So bladder infection can be ruled out. Thank you for your input.
Heres a thought. What do ya'll think of the idea of my next door neighbor getting a new male puppy 2 months ago? Do you think he smells him out in his back yard? Our yards are right next to each other and we have privacy fence between us. Do you think that would do it? I really hope not because how would I fix that one. Nykki |

Nope nothing. hmmm We went to VA in March and we took him with us but he started doing this around April 23. Maybe he wants another road trip?
We haven't had any new neighbors move in. No new people over the house. Our lives are pretty boring. The only reason I'm on the computer this much now is because of trying to figure this out. Otherwise it's not used that much. Oh he is fixed too His parents were brother and sister. The person (if you want to call them people) thought they made "cool looking" puppies together. With people like them in the world I would never have puppies. Night all and thanks again, Nykki |

I would keep at the re-potty training for a little longer. Get an extra special treat that he absolutely loves and when he goes number 2 outside give him the treat and heap on the praise. If it is a re-training issue that should do the trick in a week or two. If he is going potty in the house in the same spot clean that area really good and spray pet boundary spray over the area everyday for a week. You can buy the spray at most pet stores and it is ment to keep cats and dogs out of your yard or off your furniture. They are supposed to hate the smell. I used it when my puppy kept going piddle on my carpet in the same spot. She stopped after the first application. I made sure the can said it was safe for carpet and tested on a little area in my closet to make sure it didn't stain first.
