does spaying mellow out females?
i know neutering helps males, but just wondering on females. lucy is nuttier lately it seems- more hyper, jumpy, etc..even though we run her ragged daily.. just curious. she is a little over 6 m and getting spayed monday... think she is like a teenager now- being rebellious?

My sister's dog was always hyper and "crazy" (but in a good way
). Spaying did nothing to 'mellow her out'. Old age was the only thing that did that. Lucy is probably just, as you say, going through her teenage stage right now. The spay might slow her down for a short period while she heals but I'm sure she'll be back to her rebellious ways soon after. Hehehe! Cass. |

My females got "Aggressive" after their spays. They were perfectly normal, and sweet dogs.. never growled at anyone, and ever since they got spayed, they became alpha bitches. My friend's female did the same exact thing. They were mellow before they were spayed, and once spayed became bitchy with other dogs. Charlotte and Lucy..they are horrible! My mom is sharing a room with me because her room is getting tile put down, and painted, and remodeled.. and all the dogs are sleeping in my room now. Charlotte used to sleep in my moms room, and be the alpha in there (Alpha of all the dogs, not of people..they never growl at us, and they obey us).. and Lucy was alpha in my room..but them being in the same room, not working out..lets just say, we have had to break them up several times already..and Lucy has to sleep in a crate at night.
I will always spay and neuter my dogs, even if it does change them in a few ways..or atleast, considering I have a lot of experience with all aspects of dogs in only 18 years of living lol.. I have dealt with shy dogs, aggressive dogs, hard to train dogs, active dogs, etc, etc. But I have always noticed then when my females are spayed, they change. |

What reason would cause 3 different females, 1 living in a completely different household, to become aggressive? And it happened after they were spayed. I can't really find a word I like, but they didn't become "Aggressive"..they became bitchier, and more possessive of their humans...

Females dogs sometimes become more dominate or aggressive after being spayed. It has something to do with hormonal changes caused by the spay.

Wouldn't have anything to do with the human's behaviour after the operation then?
I didn't know the hormone change would do that to them. I don't think I've met a female who was bitchy after a spay. That's why I love GP you learn something every day. ![]() Cass. |

I definitely don't change when they get spayed..I act the same. I run into a lot of people on forums who for the first time are getting a dog spayed, and they are nervous..but its not a new thing to me, I have had over 50 animals neutered/spayed in my lifetime..and I pretty much act exactly the same way towards them. These girls have just become more possessive over their humans towards the other dogs..

Just a thought, is it possible that you were maybe more careful and watchful over them after they were spayed or more protective?
I mean, you have to keep them quiet and calm so the incision heels and the stitches don't get ripped out. This means being cooped up, no running, jumping or playing.....logically they might get a bit more frusterated from the lack of exercise, being cooped up and having alot more attention that usual. |

Well, the boys personalities never changed when they were neutered, and we were equally the same to them after they got altered, as we were to the girls. Maybe its just a girl thing to get more attached and possessive?

I have noticed that female dogs in general tend to be more posessive and in tune with their owner....Like human females, more sensitive.
Not to say that males can't also be just as bonded, I've just noticed the those traits more in females, spayed and unspayed. Did you have those 3 females your talking about spayed before the first heat, during or after? Was there any difference in timing than with the other females you've had spayed? My GSD got spayed just last Thursday. She is still exactly the same temperment wise towards me, but it did remove alot of energy so she's a bit more mellow than she was. |

Charlotte was spayed after her first heat, and my friend's dog Gigi was spayed before..and Daggett was spayed before, and Lucy I have no clue when she was spayed.

Iv never heard of them becoming more bitchy or aggressive. But calmer? Some say yes and some say no. keira, oh no! She's still as hyper as she was beforehand. But shes a sheperd too. She calms down after she gets her excersize. I have heard that spaying will keep them closer to home, keep them from roaming. Especially when in season. A friend of mine had her sheperd spayed and the only change in her was that she became a mommy to a little stuffed bunny named "ears". She cuddled it and bathed it, took it all around the house with her. Maybe she knew she would never have pups?
