If I'm not there....
Mia has done great on housetraining. But, I have a exception. If I'm not standing there to let her out, she will wet the floor. No warning no nothing. I am trying to train her to bark when she want to go potty by treating her. This is the only time she wets the floor. Do any of you have any suggestion that could help. Or do you think this should work fine

some people try bells that the dog can jingle....
Kino noses the handle, I think he thinks he can open it, and it makes a noise so I get up...but obviously Mia wont ever reach the door knob...so a bell might work.. |

Sounds like you're doing the right thing but remember it's every tie she wants to go out, not just when she has to go pee. So if you want her to go outside because you're going to go do yardwork get her to bark before opening the door. This will teach her that the bark will get the door open for her. You could also install a doggie door...
Cheers! |

OC, I've thought of a doggie door also. But, we have a few opposums and I don't want them in the house.
Fireworks, I've tried the bell she seem to be scared of it. But, it was a big bell. Maybe a smaller one might work. |

Lil Paws - I never really tried the bell thing but some of my friends did and swear by it. Hopefully, Mia will be okay with a smaller bell.

Whatever signal you decide to teach the dog, it needs to associate that signal with relieving itself, not just going outside. Otherwise, the dog has trained you to let it out whenever it wants to go out whether that has anything to do with relieving itself or not. I see lots of problems from people who tried to teach their dog to ring the bell. Their dog has trained them to get up off the couch and pay attenion to it, but the dog still pees on the floor. In training, like comedy, timing is everything.

Exactly Kit. LOL! Aren't they just the smartest? I agree totally with that. They love that attention and the door opening signal they give should definitely be associated with going pee.
Lyric got me trained up too pretty well. Everytime I'd go outside on the porch to smoke a cigerette, he'd jump up from a nice snooze on the couch to go out. Woooopie! I'd let him out with me. Then it got to where if I walked over to the place in the kitchen where I keep my cigerettes and get one out of the pack, he'd jump up and go to the door. It got to be a hassle when it was muddy outside because he was going out when it wasn't necessary and tracking more dirt inside than had to be. So lately now, I go out, leaving him inside some of the time so that he doesn't always jump up off the couch or stop what he's doing because it doesn't mean he'll necessarily get to go out. Or I'll get a cigerette, but not go outside right away, but do a few things first until he sees I'm not going out after all. LOL. Stinker! |

Carrie,
Bailey does the excact same thing. When she sees me go over to the shelf where I keep my cigarettes she jets over to the back door. She even knows the phrase "wanna smoke?"from when my husband and I ask each other and perks up and runs to the back door before we even get off the couch. Sad isn't it? |

I have noticed that when Mia wants out not to potty, she will just sit there by the door. So, I have been watching her signals. I am hoping not to let her train me. I've tried to train her to bark to go out to potty. But, day before yesterday she saw a bird, I thought she was barking wanting out. Not,She wanted a bird. I didn't notice the bird til I saw her with it. So, now I guess I need to check to see whats outside before trusting the bark.
We found the big bell and put it back up and she has nudged at it wanting out. But, then again its the same thing. Out just for pleasure.. So, I don't guess it matters which method I use. I just need to choose 1 and 1 only. So not to confuse her, right... |

LOL! Barrett. That's funny. They are sooooo smart. Yup...who knows if they're really potty trained or not? I just go out about every hour or two to have a smoke anyhow, so they just end up getting ample opportunity to go outside. I guess they do know though because if I leave for several hours, they hold it and when they go out, sometimes look soooooo relieved and end up having quite an output. LOL.
When I was in Seattle, I didn't have my crate and so took my chances with Lyric being left alone while my daughter and I went out in the evenings. We had practiced at home for very short periods a few times. He didn't get into any mischief and was so good. He just sleeps I think when I'm gone. So, the last couple of times I've gone out at night, I've just left him like the other dogs and wooopie....no problems, no chewing, no peeing. Yeah. I thought this would never happen with this late bloomer. He's 17 months already and he's taken the longest time of any dog I've ever had to be able to trust loose in the house. LOL. |

Good boy Lyric! Lucy is proving to be quite the chewer. She got my tennis shoe while I was in the shower and chewed the lace off. LOL Oooops, my bad. I can puppy proof the house really good but she decided she likes the taste of my brand new carpet. I am back to crating her when I can't watch her again. She is doing so well with potty training but it will still be a while before she can be trusted not to chew. Today will be the first time I have to leave her alone when I go to work. I had to buy those plastic mats that go under computer chairs and lay them down in her playpen so she can't get to the carpet.
LOL. 10 different toys and two stuffed kongs ought to keep her busy until I can get home. |

Wow, Lucy and the carpet. That is a hard one. You can't take the carpet away. LOL. Well, I guess all you can do is pull her away, distract and reward with something even more motivating and exciting than the carpet. I think the kong is a great idea. They all finally get onto it when we show them what we want, don't they. Some are slower than others. Sometimes my Jose boy (2.5 yr. old Chi mix) still gets into mischief. He's so puppyish still.

I just started leaving Boone out of his crate when I'm gone for a couple hours. He's been wonderful. I'm so proud of him. I'm assuming he sleeps the whole time I'm gone, Carrie, like Lyric does. He's always curled up on the sofa when I walk in the door. I had to take a late lunch today and left him out since I'll be back home in another few hours. I just have to make sure there's nothing readily available for him to destroy! LOL
