How can I get my pooch to stop jumping on strangers?

Have them bring up their knee & thump the dog in the chest & say off.

With some dogs, this can make the dog more aggresive. If your walking your dog and he jumps on somebody and that dude knees him in the chest, and every other person he jumps on knees him in the chest, you might be teaching him not to jump, but you are also teaching him that strangers are scary and might try to hurt him. (And also that off means 'I get kneed in the chest.')

What you could do instead, is work on the dog's 'sit's. Then, when company is over, have your dog on leash. When they come inside, have your dog in a sit position and reward him for sitting. If he tries/succeedes in jumping on a guest, have the guest turn sideways and ignore him. (If you have the leash on him though, he shouldn't be given that chance.) Then when he has 'four on the floor' have your guests pet him, praise him, and give him a treat.

Rose (my 6yr old doggy) used to jump all over people and I tried the kneeing in the chest thing. Didn't work. I then ignored her and turned sideways everytime she jumped on me. When she realized that she wasn't getting attention, she slid off and looked at me. Then as soon as she was off, I said, "Good Doggy!!!" and started praising her and petting her.

(Also, may I ask what breed of dog your dog is? And how old? That might play a factor in why she is jumping.)

Case in point. This works. No payoff..........no more jumping.

Surprise Jumping lessons

Thanks so much for everyones input. I realize the knee to the chest works for some and not others. It would not work for me. I am juste just as surprised as my guests..........my pooch does not do it to me! However, I WILL do the leash and sit stays. I think that is the key. I was always taught.........when there is a problem, go back to the basics!!! ON LEAD!!!!

I'm glad you decided to do the sit stays. That makes me happy . When I was little and Blackie was a puppy, he jumped all over people and my parents told him to knee him in the chest when he did it. It never really worked. I think the reason behind that was he didn't care (we rough housed with him all of the time) and he wanted attention really bad so he didn't care. (Sort of like a dog chasing a cat through an electric fence.) I think he really only stopped jumping was when I got older and started trianing him more and he got older and lost his puppy silliness.
(Rose only jumps up now when I ask her to, to give me a kiss on the chin )
