Jumping, Nipping and Four Year Old Child
What do you tell a four year old child who is having trouble with the puppy nipping and jumping on them?? The puppy is approx 12 weeks old and a border collie. My friend has the four year old and the puppy, so she asked me to go over their tomorrow to talk to her about how to keep the puppy from jumping and nipping her(the four year old). Now I know how to explain this to adults and help them come up with alternatives (sit insted of jump, etc) but what do I tell a four year old? How do I put it in terms for her to understand? How can I make it easy for her to do?
Any suggestions or ideas for Children would be greatly appreciated Thanks in advance. |

My daughter got a border collie pup and her daughter was under four and they had a similar problem
She taught her daughter to say SIT and also taught her not to get down at the pups eye level. I am sure many more will have great suggestions |

We had a similar problem with my 4 year old nephew and River.
I gotta say the toughest part was getting the kid to do what we asked him!! As River seemed to have difficulty connecting obedience commands with my nephew at first (particularly as the commands were new to him at the time as well and the obvious language different in young children compared to adults) we did the cross your arms with your hands under your armpits and turn your back on the dog completely until eventually River worked out that to get the attention he was so deseperate for he had to have all paws on the floor. It took a little bit of time on both parts but it did eventually work. Once River started to really know what sit meant we moved on to my nephew getting him to actually use the command with a dog. As I said the hard part is getting the child to cooperate but it's worth the effort in the end! |

I agree with Rivsky.....I taught my son to do the same thing with pups. Stand still, cross your arms, and ignore them...if they jump up, turn around. Its like playing "Red Light, Green Light".....when the pup stops, "Green Light" to pet...when he jumps, "Red Light" to stop.

click on parents and press for some great little articles on this topic. Your friend might also like to have a copy of the book "living with kids and dogs.... with out losing your mind" by Colleen Pelar. I haven't read it but it's supposed to be great. |
