tug o war
Mia is doing great with her commands. Other than fetch..
Here lately when i throw a toy and she fetches it she will not give it, she wants to play tug o war and try to bite at your hand. Any suggestion on how to break her from this? |

You can teach her to "give." Just have some treats in your pocket. I mean really good treats. My dogs love mozzerella cheese or liver treats. Ask her to come, sit. Then put your hand out for her to "give" and at the same time offer her a treat AFTER she gives. She'll tend to just open her mouth and let the toy drop if she's treat motivated. Then praise her and just hand her back the toy. Repeat this a few times, then throw the toy or ball again and trade her for a treat again. Let her get the idea that she will get the toy back, that it's not gone for good. And that it's fun and rewarding to hand it over to you. Use the same word/command everytime. When it's time to put the toy away for a while (which you should do if she's getting possessive of it) give her a few treats and some other fun thing to do so she kind of forgets that her toy is gone for a few hours or whatever. I would not let her have toys 24/7 until she is willing to give them to you nicely. You be the one to decide when she will have playtime with them.
Tug of war is a fine game, but only when the dog is very willing to give up her toys first. So, I'd hold off on that game for a while. |
