Does he bark when he is with you? just when he can't see you? Does he bark for no reason? Teaching him "be quite" might work. The shelties do not bark in the house, they only bark when they have to go out or when the oil person is here.

I bark when little girls scream, too.
Brody is just joining in the *barking*These barks are for different reasons. For alert barking, like when the door bell rings or someone is outside, let him bark a few times because that's his job as a dog. You can teach him to come and get you when he's on alert, or you can teach him "enough" (or be quiet or shut up or whatever, just don't shout). That way he understands that you know there is potential danger and he's alerted you to it. Job done. For barking for attention, you have to ignore him (no matter how horrible it is at first. He really will stop in a few days.) If you tell him to be quiet or pay any attention to him, you've taught him that barking works. Sometimes when people are standing up, talking to each other (loudly or excitedly), dogs don't understand what's going on and they bark to make *you* stop barking. Sometimes it helps if you stand sideways to the person you're talking to. And everybody in the family has to do the same things or it won't work. It won't work if one person ignores attention barking and somebody else tells him to be quiet instead. |
