Barking at everything

Mufasa's been barking at everything lately. If he hears a noise, even one he's heard before, he barks and won't stop, and sometimes he starts barking for no reason. He barks at people outside, but even when he can't see them anymore, he keeps barking. I tried teaching him "quiet" but he just ignores me. Does anyone know how to get him to stop?

Perhaps try teaching him to 'speak' on command before teaching him to be quiet?
You could also try making a loud noise like rattling a can with coins in it (or something similar) to distract him and when he shuts up, reward him for being quiet?

If I were dealing with it myself, I'd probably start with teaching him to speak first though.

Just a thought...how much socialisation does he get?

Cass.

I have the same problem with my two youngest, Bob and Reese (Miniature dachshunds). They bark at everything, and usually for no reason other then to hear themselves bark.

I use a squirt gun. I spray them as soon as they bark while saying "Quiet", and as soon as they sush up, they get a treat. It worked wonders for Bjorn..he used to be a major barker. Its going "alright" for Bob and Reese, but I want to try new methods.

I tried shaking a can with coins in it and he just looked at it and then started barking again.

A lot... most people we meet on walks pet him or play with him, and sometimes I take him with me when I'm shopping or at parties, and usually people want to pet him. He's very friendly and loves people.

The purpose of the can is not to completely make them stop barking. It's something to interupt that behavior (stop barking and look at you). Once he's quiet, you should REWARD like crazy for him being quiet.
