Your dog will be fine with your son as long as you introduce them carefully. Just make sure that your pup associates your son with positive things. You can even try giving your puppy lots of yummy treats while your baby is around. Any puppy, regardless of breed, can get along with children, especially children in the family.
Make sure that you socialize your puppy with children of all ages, so that when your son gets older and has friends over for playdates, your dog will be okay with it. Huskies are good with children (I'm pretty sure) but Akitas can be unfriendly to strange children if improperly socialized. |

Yup both breeds are excellent with family members. I would only feed the puppy meals when the baby is around and special treats too. This will associate the baby with happy things and the dog will learn to love having the baby around. I know of a few people who always let new 4-legged family members into the kitchen when the baby is eating because as I'm sure everyone knows, when babies eat more goes on the floor than in their bellies so the puppy will in turn be getting "lots of treats from the baby". Of course this can only be done if what the baby is eating is safe for doggies to eat too.
Huskies are very social animals and will welcome anyone into their home with a wagging tail, Akitas tend to be very reserved with strangers so socialization is a must. Have people come by your house and give the puppy a treat so that it learns that new people are wonderful. Also take it out to parks and pet stores so the puppy becomes desensitized to new environments. Once your boy gets old enough to talk, have him perform obedience excercises with the dog. This will help teach the dog that your son is Alpha over the dog. Both Siberian Huskies and Akitas are very dominant breeds so if the Alpha position isn't established by each member of the family, the dog will have no problem filling in the role and that could lead to behavioural issues down the road. Last but not least, make sure you sign up for obedience class. This is a wonderful place not just to get your puppy trained, but you as well on how to work with the puppy to keep the both of you happy and get any questions you may have, answered. Also in obedience class there is many opportunities for socialization. Good luck! Cheers! |

Thank you everyone for kind responses!!! We are now feeding my son in the same room as Egon (The Humane Society named him!!! But I do like his name!! LOL!!!) And he seems to be a little more relaxed when we do that?? Maybe he feels that he is getting attention too!! LOL!!! While I feed my son Egon gets 2 or 3 treats and he really LOVES his treats!!
One more question if I could, Egon really likes to play bite as I call it, he don't bite hard and he don't bite with aggression, I think he is just playing (I hope!!!!!!) My question is is this normal?? My wife and everybody that has had dogs says it is. And also what can you do to make him stop nipping or prevent this. He will be attending his first class of many in 3 weeks. Thank you everyone in advance and this is a really nice forum!! Thank you!! J.P., J.P. & EGON!!! |

This topic has been discussed before. Here's a couple links to advice given by various members, and most of it is pretty good. Don't worry, at this age, I don' think he'd be biting out of aggression. Just read some of the following threads and apply the advice and keep consistent. Good luck, and remember almost every dog owner goes through thism its perfectly normal, and with some guidance the puppy grows into a dog that knows what it can and can't put its teeth on.
