Why does my dog do this?

We have one dog, Murphy, and three cats. Quite often the cats will get into a scuffle. Nothing serious, just a paw swipe here and there. Every time, Murphy growls at them and feels the need to intervene. Is this his "alpha" side taking over, wanting to keep them in line, or what?

Possibly, but even non-Alpha dogs do not like arguing in their personal space.

roscoe FREAKS out if there is any type of violence in the house...even if someone is watching a ball game and gets excited he starts growling. when poe (cat) and trixie (dog) get into a chasing match...roscoe will sometimes run right into trixie to get her attention and "tell" her to stop
