Why do my dogs make out!?
I have not posted on here for a long time, hello again!
Well I am now not just Malu's mom but also Raleigh's! We got another Cavalier puppy (tri) and she has the same mother but different father as Malu. We were concerned about how Malu would take another pup in the house since she is like our child. Well, I guess our surprise has been how WELL they get along. They are BFF! We love how they play together non-stop, they sleep together, they just love each other. They are the cutest sisters. But here's the weird thing, and maybe this is normal and I don't know it, sometimes they will do this weird mouthing thing where they are definitely not biting each other, it's literally more like they are making out. They will lick and mouth each other for like an hour, no joke. On the one hand it seems very sweet and cute, and on the other hand it's kind of weird, gross yet funny! I definitely don't think this is a behavior I should discourage, I think they are playing or something. It seems there is usually some explanation for doggie behavior, does anyone know what they are doing? Thanks! Hope all is well! Malu's (and Raleigh's!) Mom |

Hahaha! I know exactly what you are talking about. My two do it as well, although it's more Tysa doing the licking, and PJ just lets her. Sometimes she gets her whole snout down his throat, but he never minds it, he actually looks quite content about it.
I don't know why it happens, but PJ seems to have "attractive drool/saliva". Quite a few dogs we've met on walks have done this to him as well. |

The other dog who is doing the licking smells food. Puppies weaning from their mother do the same thing, it is natural.
Harley friend does it to him when he just finished eating. just like many creatures feeding there young will eat the initial fool, then regurgitate to feed the young. |

My friends JRT does it to her big GS's, I think it is sooo gross. I always make her stop when I am around--it gives me the creeps. LOL
We joke that she was a dentist in a past life. ![]() |

Hmm, I've always known "licking" as a form of bonding. But I don't remember where I learned that, nor do I remember how long ago that was. Maybe that's what your pups are doing?
Sounds to me that's just their way of "playing" or spending time with each other. I've seen some of the dogs are work sit and constantly lick anothers mouth in a form of submission (crouched/laying down, ears back, tail low but happily wagging, etc), but I've never seen them literally IN eachothers mouth. lol |
