It just sounds like you need go back to the basics of housetraining. It probably won't take her long to get back on track. Dogs don't generalize well, which means just because she was housetrained in the other house, doesn't mean that the same rules apply in yours. Start taking her out on a leash every 30 min to an hour. If she starts to go, say a cue word like "potty", "get busy" or you pick
. The minute she's finished, praise her like she just won the lottery, make sure she knows she's fantastic for doing her business outside. For right now I would even up the incentive with a super special treat. Find something she'll really flip for and reserve this treat for successful potty trips outside. What you want to do is show her that outside is the best place to go. She'll soon start to associate the word with the deed and get the hang of it, you just need to be consistent. When that happens you can slowly spread out the trips. Until then, if you should catch her in the midst of an accident, don't get mad, just get her attention with an AH-AH and hurry her out to finish her business in the right spot. Don't forget the praise and treats. Should you find the accident after the fact - blame yourself - you should have been watching her. That said, until she has earned the priviledge, don't let her to wander around the house unattended. You need to set her up for success which means limiting her opportunities to sneak away and mess in the house. When you can't supervise her you need to find a place to confine her, like with a crate or gated off in the kitchen or another room. Good luck...and be patient. She just needs to learn the proper place to go. One more thing - I would also suggest you clean the areas she's soiled with a product like Nature's Miracle or other enzymatic cleanser. This will kill the scent, which will also kill the temptation to come back to the same spot and mess again. |

Why isn't she getting walked as much? Any way to increase her exercise? Even a ten minute game of fetch would probably be immensely enjoyed and is great exercise. Is this a very sudden thing-one day she's fine, the next having lots of accidents? If so, I would take her to the vet to rule things out, or at least give them a call.
Definitely don't scold her if you don't catch her in the act-not only do they not understand the correlation, but some dogs react by just going and hiding to do their business in the house, leaving lots of 'surprises' behind! When I was housebreaking Sophie and would catch her in the act, I would clap my hands and say "no! no! no!" (not angrily, but urgently) and rushing her out the door. Usually your sudden outburst is enough to surprise them, temporarily stopping the accident so you can get them outside to finish. Then praise her like mad and give her a super special treat, like a hot dog or cheese. FYI-Nature's Miracle really is a miracle! |
