Cute tricks easy to train!
Just wanted to share some cute tricks I've trained Sophie to do-
Last night I taught her to run under my legs when I say "Are you scared?" It's so cute and easy to train: start by standing over your dog, and treat them (I use a clicker too) while saying "scared" over and over again. Then lure them to run under your legs with a treat in your hand (I used cheese) and give them a treat when they are under your legs saying just the word "scared". Just do this over and over again, then add starting by saying "Are you scared?", lure them with the treat and feed the treat when they are under your legs. It's so cute-after one day I will be across the room and say "Are you scared?" and she will run and go under my legs, peering up at me! I also trained her to "Say thank you" which is her speak command. It's really cute when I have a friend give her a treat, and then I tell her to say thank you and she barks. I also trained her to "Say you're sorry" which is laying down and resting her head on her paws. I used the same concept-when she was lying down with her head on her paws randomly, I would treat her while saying "sorry" over and over again, and then when she went into a down position, would treat her any time she would lower her head-even marginally-and soon she realized if she rested her head on her paws she got a treat! It's very cute : ) I was able to teach Sophie all of these in a night, they're pretty easy, cute and fun! |

That's fantastic!
Thanks for sharing how you trained them too. You should make a video of Sophie doing them. ![]() Cass. |

I'd love to see a video of Sophie doing those tricks - they sound great!!
It's funny because I'm actually working on teaching River "sorry" as well after seeing a dog here do it and it was just the cutest trick! He also just learnt to "find the money" after he was going through my OH's pockets and decided to run off with a $50 note - it didn't take him long before he learnt to pick them up and bring them to me!! |

This stuff is great, you all! I'm going to give these ideas a try. Brody boy, however, is not in the same frame of mind....to learn things. His main focus right now is running around the house barking and chasing squirrels, chippies and birds (they're outside making noises, he hears them, but can't quite figure out how to get to them).
He's driving me nuts. |

Another fun trick...
Thanks guys, maybe i will make a video one of these days...I know my friends get a real kick out of it, and Sophie always looks pleased as punch over the attention
![]() One other fun one is teaching them to differentiate between their toys. I started off with a stuffed giraffe and a heart, and would show her the toy and say the name over and over, then put them side by side and say "take the giraffe" and if she went to the heart instead, i would say "no" and lure her to the giraffe with a treat, and place the treat on the giraffe and praise her when she ate the treat off the giraffe. Now we are up to her: stuffed heart, stuffed giraffe, stuffed bone (called "Sheepy") stuffed spotted man-looking thing (called "Spot"), stuffed pumpking and bone, which is her real bone that I stuff with peanut butter or wet food. She is so good now i can place them anywhere in the apt and ask her to "go get...." and she will hunt around until she finds it, then brings it back to me! It's so much fun, and a great confidence booster, especially for Sophie who is somewhat shy and insecure sometimes. |

I feel like such as slacker....I think the last trick/command we taught was "get your toy" for little Hank.
I'd love to see your videos....that would be great! |

Those are all such great ideas to try with Chloe!
I really need to get off of my butt and teach her new things as she is so smart...I'm just happy with the basics I guess. She now has a solid down and stay, which were the things I wanted to work on. Time to teach those tricks, I guess! |

Ritz, is Chloe the dog on your avatar? What a beauty. Sheltie?
My last Sheltie was eager to learn tricks. All I had to do was say "tricks" and he'd go through his whole "bag" of them. My puppy (now 1 yr, 2 mos), was going along really well, but the last month or two, he's only interested in being "rowdy". Hopefully, we can get back to some stuff that's fun for me as well as for him (I'm not rowdy). |
