Split Personalities?

All right, So my mum has told me something about the dogs. While my sister, my dad, and I are at work, my mum says the dogs are really calm, they just lie around and sleep. But when I get home, or when my dad gets home, or when my sister gets home, the dogs are so incredibly hyper, they just keep going and they get into spats and it just gets really noisy and stressful. Why is this? I know I don't deliberately hype them up, I don't even greet them when I get in the door! I know there is a reason for their behaviour, I just can't figure out what it is!

I've noticed the same thing with Chloe - when I'm the only one home she is calm, content, and relaxed even when she has full run of the house. When the rest of the family is home she goes BONKERS. You can't get her to settle down for anything and she is constantly getting into things.

The only thing I could think of, besides the fact that more of her "pack" is home, I'm a very relaxed person and I'm not active when at home. Everyone else is almost constantly going back and forth between rooms and making rucus which I feel Chloe feeds off of. ("Since everyone else is going from room to room and talking, I'm going to run from room to room and bark!")

My dogs are the same way. During the day when I'm home and everyone else is at work/school the dogs sleep all day for the most part. They are very quiet. In the evenings when everyone is home they are a lot more active and louder, too.

I think Mandi is the same way. It is sort of like...play with them while they are all here. She is definetely more active and playful in the mornings and at night than at any other time. It doesn't matter who stays home, or is with her during the day, she usually just sleeps unless you take her out or engage her in any way.

Look at all the documentries on wolves and their behavior. They all go into warp drive when the other pack members come back after a long hunt. No difference with our domesticated dogs. They are "pack" animals and are VERY happy when everyone is together.

That's exactly it.

I never even considered that. And it makes perfect sense, especially how I consider that every day my dad comes home, the first thing he does is give the dogs a treat! In the dogs mind, my dad is giving them the "choicest" bit of food before he does anything else.

Good going Calgal! I never even would have considered that, but it does make a lot of sense!
