my dog keeps trying to mount our puppy

both of my dogs were rescuees so im not entirely sure of the ages but recently we found a stray female puppy and took her in but my roughly 2 year old male wont stop trying to mount her, im getting scared he will hurt her as we cant leave them alone and he is disobeying me more and more and trying to mount her iv tried scolding him and sending him in his bed but as soon as he sees a chance he takes it i just dont know what to do and really dont want to hit him HELP

It is impossible to stop a male from mounting a female if he really wants to do that. You will have to keep them totally apart, and make sure the male can't chew is way out of wherever you put him. Is your male neutered? If you aren't showing him I would strongly advise having that done. Next choice would be have someone else take care of the female till either her family is found or she gets a new home.

I agree, she could be in heat, it's impossible to stop him mounting (or trying to mount) her. Keep them completely seperate, no playtime together even when supervised. I'd take the female to the vet and have her checked out to see if she's in heat and I'd have them both spayed and neutered as soon as possible. Your male (as Calgal said, assuming you are not showing him) should be done first.
