Leash manners...

Well I live on a very rural road and like to walk my dogs every day down it. There is another girl who walks her Golden Retriever. I have a problem when we happen to pass each other I am almost dragged down the street. Now that I have a huge 70 pound dog it's hard for me I guess to hold everyone. They are all terrific otherwise! It's just when we pass by this dog, cat or person that happens to be in a yard. Any suggestions?

For people passing you, you can have the dogs sit and have tasty treats for those who pay attention to you. After the person has left then go your way. It's a bit anti-social but with 4 dogs it may be helpful.

For you passing someone else or animal you don't want to greet, I'd be tempted to run past the distraction. I did this with Montana when we saw a cat coming up, I'd just pick up the pace or even run past the cat, worked great.

Thanks. Today I was in a subdivision on my road and there was a little boson terrier in the yard. The dogs were trying to pull me up this person's driveway and it took me forever to get them to come. I had to drag them and Gabby freaked out and almost slipped her collar. It didn't help that the little dog was barking at us. If there are no distractions they heel perfectly by my side with a loose leash.

Maybe next time I will ask the girl with the golden retriever if her dog is dog friendly and just let them meet each other and then maybe they will be better the next time. Today I pretty much did what you said although I didn't have treats. I stopped and tried to hold them still until she was past me but they were still lunging until the point of gagging themselves. Another neighbor was outside and found it funny. lol As soon as they couldn't see them anymore they were fine again.

Silly neighbors keep us humble, I guess we look so goofy with happy crazy dogs they can't help but laugh.
