Underground containment fences

What are your views on these? I'm really considering getting one for Lucy and Gabby since they tend to not have a very good recall.

Underground Dog Containment Fence -

I can't say what I would do if I didn't have a fence. I do know people who have these but it doesn't keep other dogs or animals out. Just a consideration.

I have a PetSafe brand electric fence for Chloe and besides the fact that she has a thick coat that I'll need to shave to allow the collar to work (and your Lucy has fuzzy fur like Chloe does), I like it. She respects it enough to not go near it and I've only done a couple of training sessions with her.
Four of my neighbors all have electric fences and it works for them as well.

Keep in mind that if you have a very shy dog that the fence might do more harm than good and also that they CAN get out if they really want to. Our neighbor's Beagle and their Boxer x can both get out of their fence if they are so inclined, but they normally stay by the house.

Both Lucy and Gabby are very confident. Using it on my dog Gracie would definatly be a problem she is very timid. Maybe i'll get one for my birthday in a few months.

It's not ideal a real fence is always the best solution, for my 2 dogs it worked great and I'd never trade their freedom for my peace of mind and them in a cage or trapped in teh house.

I don't necessary feel this way about very small or toy dogs due to the increased risk of attack from wild animals or a giant bird flying off with them!

I just puchased petsafe wireless invisible fence not long ago from Electric Pet Fence & Wireless Dog Fences - FREE SHIPPING ON EVERYTHING WE SELL! and it has worked wonders. the best thing is that it only takes a few seconds to set up rather than needing to dig transmitters into the lawn.

Ive heard of folks whose dogs will run clear through an invisible fence so you might want to incorporate a little one-on-one training with your fence once you install it.

I just wanted to 2nd the training piece, you can't just install it, put the collars on and head out to the mall. It will only work as well as your training it's not fair to most dogs to just let them figure it out on their own by trial and error. Some dogs will freeze up in terror when they get corrected for the first time so to me it's very important that they understand the cause and effect of the invible fence.

Also some dogs seem to pick it up my faster\better than others, not sure what the deal with that is.

Of course I would train them to it first. They are both very smart so they should catch on very quickly.

Well, i've never been a supporter of those type of fences. I'd never use that type of fence for any of my dogs. I much rather having a real fence myself. I don't know, i've just always thought of them as being cruel, but everyone has a different opinion on the matter.

I somewhat understand your sentament, but don't you think it's much more cruel for them to be trapped in the house(ie large cage) or at the end of a leash 95% of their lives?

One thing you might want to consider is to teach each dog individually, not 2 or more dogs at the same time. I've seen normally loving and happy dogs redirect aggression onto the nearest dog the instant after being shocked by a collar and it's not pretty.

Just some food for thought.

Thank you! As of right now there is just one dog that needs it. Lucy, I am currently trying to train her to just stay in the yard while i'm with her. Don't worry we have lots of land and are far back from the road which isn't busy at all. So i'm working on reliable stays and comes right now.
