Worried about him.

We picked Buddy up yesterday from being boarded. Now he stayed at the place he goes to daycamp at. While, he would only go potty on his nature walks which is a GREAT thing. And he was overall really good. But he has a cut on the top of his head, and his bottom lip is puffy, and the top one has a couple sore spots, and I was trying to look at that [because its really noticible]and he kept trying to pull his head away, like it hurt. Normally I can play with his mouth no problems. Then, I told him to lay down on his couch, and he went and layed down right away like I was going to beat him or something. He's also not responding to his name. He's really withdrawn. He also wont play, I'm not sure if he's just tired or what. But he's just laying on his couch right now and I keep calling his name and he isn't even looking up. I'm not sure what is going on? I know he can hear! Because he heard us getting his food out/ potty treats/ etc. I just don't get it, really wierd, and i'mworried! Is this normal behavior for getting home and readjusting? Then there responce to the cut and his mouth was, "oh it could have happend playing, or in his suite trying to get out, or something" Just no clue. And it was like they didn't even notice it! how could you miss it. I noticed it right away, in 2 seconds of seeing him. He's missing hair there, how can you NOT miss it. I've never had any problems before with them, so this really distrubes me.

Hmm. He could have injured himself if he panicked and tried to get out of the kennel or "suite". That's pretty common with SA dogs. He's never done that before?
It probably does hurt. If you're concerned, take him to the vet and let them look at him. It might not be serious. He might just want to be left alone with his headache. But the vet will help put your mind at easy either way.
Poor Buddy! Let us know how it goes.

He's never injured himself in his crate at home before. But he plays quite rough, so if a dog with sharp nails could have "clawed" his head. It doesn't look infected and is scabed up, and been putting "doggie neosporin" on it [forget the name, got it at petsmart]. Its just really odd, for him to not even respond to his name. He's eating and drinking and poop GREAT. Just really lethargic. I just don't have a "GOOD" vet, that I trust.

Was he interacting with other dogs at this place? He might've gotten in a bit of a fight and scolded after so he's not feeling too happy, not to mention being in pain doesn't help. I would just keep going on your day as if nothing wrong because if he senses that you're worried this could contribute to him acting odd. Make sure you don't baby him when he is acting this way because then he will learn "hey if I look mopey I get extra treats and hugs! I should act like this all the time!" When he is ready he will come back to his normal self. I know this probab ly sounds harsh but that's when we must remember that dogs percieve things differently than humans

It's good that he's feeling better now. Sometimes they feel mopey or depressed if they feel they were abandoned, but you say he's been there before. As for the cut on his head, I would question the place where he was boarded, even if it is getting better. They may be aware of, or seen something that may explain it. Obviously, something did take place, because he did have the cut on his head. Glad he's returning to his normal self.

Did the place you kept him say anything about the cuts to you?
If not I would really ask them about it and maybe get a few answers about what happened.

I'm so glad he's returning to his 'ole self. When I read your post, I was thinking......(hate to say it) abuse. (?) If you've had him there before and all was well, that's hard to believe. Were there any new people working there? It's hard for me to imagine rough play with another dog, even if he got hurt causing that emotional distress. But maybe it was indeed a combination of his ouchies and just the fact that he was seperated from you. I agree that you should bring this up with the boarding place. They should be responsible that your dog doesn't receive injuries. They should be accountable. I'd think twice before using that facility again...just my gut feeling.

At any rate, I'm sure you're relieved that he is becoming more chipper.

I was with carrie getting ready to scream abuse. Just maybe he did hurt himself innocently but he sure was going to make you feel bad for taking him there . So glad he is his old self

We noticd it before they even said anything. They didn't get any new people working there, that hadn't been there for at least the last 2.5 - 3 months. I would think more along the lines of some sort of abuse, if I had never brought him there before and that happened. I don't plan on bring him back there anytime soon, since he's being GREAT in his crate. At least, long enough that we can come home and check on him at lunch breaks, etc. But if I do go back there, I will say something to the manager. Poor baby has a bald spot on his head

ETA -- His mouth looks alot better, and isn't sensitive to touch anymore. You can still see some spots that look sore but they don't seem to be bothering him, or look infected. I would put some doggie neosporin on it, but he'd just lick it off, and not sure thats a good idea!

Well, I'm sure glad he's feeling better.

Yeah...I think it's weird that they didn't say anything about his owies....like they were hoping you wouldn't notice? Duh....you said they were obvious. So, that was WRONG of them to not say something, like "gee, I'm so sorry he got wounded. We'll knock something off your bill." Idiots!

Anyway, it sounds like you've got a plan and it's good that he's feeling better.

Thats exactly, what I was thinking. Then they charged me an additional $15, I should have put a fight about that, but whatever I was so tired [after about 7 hours of being on a plan and traveling and jet lag, my brain wasn't thinking].

He's just being Mr. Hyper ::LOL:: Just full of energy [you could take him on a 4 mile walk and he'll look at you like, "come on lets play" or "is that it",]
