Scent Work

Thought I'd video our training session on this one this week.

Once I figured out a method that helped him understand he needs to use his nose to find the "smelly" one he's been doing great with this one. This is our second session in a row where he managed to bring back all the correct articles. I'm still scenting them with food at the moment but still pleased with what he's been able to do so far

It's fun to teach them how to use all the senses for us, isn't it? we call that exercise "little wood" in Mondio ring. I don't train for it specifically, but have friends that do. I guess I can't bring myself to teach an exercise called "little wood". Technically its scent discrimination, but the other is a blow to my masculinity Us men have fragile egos you know

anyway, (is your dog's name rivsky or river?? or neither??) I'm terrible for not knowing, I apologize. But it looks like river? rivsky? is enjoying it quite a bit. I bet in a couple weeks you can be outside with loads of unscented articles and one scented one and he'll come back with the right one. Good luck

Thanks GSD, his name is River

That's weird calling it "little wood" no wonder you don't have much motiviation to teach it!!

We've already got the full set out of articles out as it worked much better for us then slowly adding unscented articles as he was just randomly grabbing whichever one he saw first. Will have to move it outside and really test him at some stage though

Great video. Thanks for sharing. Looks like River is having a great time. Sorry if you already explained this but what type of scent is on the articles which you want him to identify?

At the moment I'm scenting the article I want him to find with food to teach him to find the one that smells. Eventually it will just be scented with my own scent, you hold the article in your hands and don't touch the other articles at all (so put them out using tongs).
