What Am I Going To Do?!
I have a 5 year old male and 2 year old female..both dobermans. They have both been house trained for ages. We just moved to the house of our dreams and they are sh@#ing and p*&*ing all over it!!. They have the freedom of the yard all they want. This behavior seemed to stop after the first couple days, then this morning I go down to the (finished) basement and there is a big pile of crap and about 4 pee stains. They're going to ruin our house! Right now they eat, go outside and go in their crates. I can't trust them loose in the house at all.

I think you are doing the right thing. Just basically start over with the potty training...
I'm going to assume a lot of it because of the fact it's a new house... they're trying to leave their scent. Was this house previously lived in? I know this house we have now, they must have had a dog because the minute we had the dogs in the house, they ALL went into my dads room sniffing the carpet, and about 2 or 3 of them pee'd and pooped! Willah is still a constant battle with that so we've had to keep the door shut when no one is in there... although she has no shame to do it right in front of somebody too! So, my best advice is start over with potty training! Crate them when they cannot be supervised, and take them out right after they eat, drink, sleep, wake up, play, etc. OH, and be sure to use an enzyme cleaner (Nature's Miracle) on the spots they have soiled or you'll just be going in circles... |

Yeah Gooch, I have to agree with IBS as well... It's all about a new environment and the probable fact that there was most likely another dog present before you guys moved into the place. I have no doubt with time this problem will clear itself soon. Hang in there...

Could it be that they're stressed in this new environment and all the change of routine that takes place when moving...all the commotion, nervousness etc? Dogs are extremely discerning about the tiniest changes in their environment. I know stress can cause these types of things.
Like Icey said, the best thing to do is re-train them as you would a new puppy, give very good reinforcements for all successes outside and really supervise them inside.... and try to give them activities to reduce their stress level...perhaps increased, fun exercise and relax a little bit on some of the other usual demands we make of our dogs...just for a little while. Perhaps raise their mental stimulation as far as fun training....agility...something that while they're having to pay attention, they're also having an outlet for their stress at the same time. Just have patience while they adjust to their new environment. Good luck. |

The same thing happened when we moved into our new house 7 months ago. All the dogs "forgot" that they were housetrained and went to the bathroom in the house even though the backdoor to the backyard was ALWAYS open!!! We are still working on a couple of them...but most of them are going outside again.

Yeah, the previous owners had dogs. Plus I'm sure they're a little stressed...hell, I am too LOL. I guess I'll just try this for a while and do some fun stuff with them. They love to hike.
The first time it happened it was late and the pet store was closed. I went to Walmart and got "Out" stain and odor remover. It is an enzyme cleaner and seems similar to Nature's Miracle...It seems to be working. |

I'll see what I can dig up.
It will be hard to take them to do fun things when my first instinct is to strangle them ! LOL They also pee all over the deck and patio when outside, but obviously the soiling the house is my primary problem right now |

The same thing happened to us when we moved into our new house several years back. Almost all of our dogs started going potty in the new house. We just basically had to re-housebreak them, and before long they were back to going potty outdoors just like they had done before we moved. So, i'd just try to re-train them. Hopefully, it will all work out for you!
Best of luck! ![]() |

I'd make sure to get a good enzymatic cleaner. Maybe 2 or 3 different brands & do a thorough cleaning. I'd suspect the prior owners had some problems with their pets. My favorite product is "Odoban" ... (I like it much better than Nature's Miracle & several others I've tried).

Well, I'm pretty sure Blitz is the offender. After 3 weeks of crate training I decided to let them out confined to the basement for short increments. I checked after about 5 minutes and he had peed and pooped in the floor. How likely is getting him neutered now at 5 years old going to stop this new behavior?

neutering him will do nothing for this behavior. You need to treat him like he is a 8 week old puppy and he'll learn much faster, but you're skipping steps.
NEVER leave him unsupervised, just like you wouldnt leave a puppy unsupervised and expect them to be good. Essentially what you need to train them to do is not go in THIS house... just like you'd trained them to not go in the OTHER house. Do it the same way, no times with no supervision out free, frequent trips outside or to the proper place, confinement when not supervised. It'll go much faster but it needs to be done the same way as when you had a puppy. Skipping steps, or leaving them unsupervised and allowing accidents is going to keep putting you further and further back and getting you more and more frustrated. |

Just introduce her normally and keep a constant eye on her, just as if she were a puppy. It's easier to correct a potential problem then try and correct a problem that has been ongoing for some time. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, as they say.

Well, they're still being crate trained. It just sucks because it feels like they aren't really part of the family anymore. They are only allowed out in the house when they can be completely supervised which isn't much time each day since we have small children. It's like they're in supermax prison
