Chasing Cat
Heya,
Im having some issues with my pup and chasing the cat. he is currently 7mnths and still a puppy. He will chase the cat continuously and we will correct him but he still goes on. He knowes how serious I take this as when he was younger he would nip so we would lay a small one on his rear hips and scold him and then give him a toy and praise him. He was corrected after a week and we never had an issue since. we used this method with the cat at the exact moment so he knew what he was doing but we are getting nowhere with this after months. Any recomendations? |

My recommendations would be to not hit your Doberman or your cat. Hitting doesn't teach anything. It can only make your dog want to get that "bad thing" which you've assoicated with a scolding....or a lousy time. That makes the cat even "badder."
A cat, to most dogs is prey and it is natural for them to chase small, fury animals. The only thing you can do is seperate them OR....teach your dog that the cat is a good thing, a friend by associating the cat's presence with good, treats, happy, gentle etc. But...not while he's in the throws of the chase. Wait for a time when he's just hanging out and the cat is somewhere nearby. Your dog may get use to the cat in time and visa versa....but then again, it might not. So, you might need to give the cat it's own space away from the dog. Good luck. |

i shoulda clarafied about the 'hitting' because there is no pain in the action at all, all it is is a tap that says 'this means business'
like when you grab someones shoulder. I went thru and checked everything and all of it has been done. I wasn't sure what I was looking for but this is going to be a time issue. They sleep next to eachother sometimes and walk by eachother but he just has too much of the puppy-play desire. The dog has grown up with the cat since 8wks. |

Well good. It sounds like he's just being a typical Doberbrat, like Lyric, who bugs Jose sometimes like that. Only Jose turns about and give Lyric what for and Lyric backs off. One day, your cat might swipe at your Dobe and teach him a lesson...that, or tick your Dobe off to the point that he strikes back with his big Doberteeth. A-h-h. Hopefully, he'll simmer down in time. And hopefully, your cat will get some moments of peace and quiet. LOL.

well. they have a REALLY weird relationship.
for example after a walk loki would walk in, corona would roll onto his back and the dog would put its mouth around the cat, then walk off. the cat definitly does not back down from the dog always, he will stand up and box the hell outa loki, its amazing and I should catch a vid sometime to hear the noise from each hit. they are a weird couple |

My Aussie grew up with my cat since he was 3 months old. Now he is
3, he still chase my cat occasionally. Sometimes when my Aussie being too annoying, my cat will teach him a lesson. Or I will stop him by shouting ' no, banjo, no cat ', he'll stop chasing. But with the street cat, is a different story, I don't think I can ever stop him chasing the street cat . |

Ayl, the stronger the prey drive, the more likely the dog will chase a cat - or anything else that runs. Like I can never trust OC alone with a cat now that his fear of them have diminished because I know he could and probably would kill them thinking it's just a game.

Thanks ! And you're right, my Aussie will chase anything that moves My neighbour has a 2 years old mutt. He's not aggressive, off leash all the time, he never bother other people and dog. But he kill cats (we have many stray cat in the neighbour hood ). The wife told him the dog killed cats, the dog tear the cat apart, blood everwhere. He don't believed it untill one day he saw it himself. Now the dog has to wear muzzle everytime he goes out. |
