riding in the car
This is kinda odd for Buddy. I just got a new car this past weekend. He LOVES car rides. I'll say, "Buddy want to go for a car ride" and he'll get all excited and go run over to the door while i'm getting my stuff together, and if i'm taking to long, he'll try getting his leash or come running to where I am, in the "hurry up already mommy" look. Well, I took him out to the new car and he refused to jump in, like normal. I keep treats with me, when I have him so I set a treat on the seat and he jumped in fine. No further problems.
Well, we never use doggie seat belts [I can't find one to fit him right, and not sure they are good or bad, i'd love to see a debate on them]. He normally lays on the floor in the back seat of the car, because he had enough room to. Well in the new car he doesn't have as much room to lay down. Plenty of leg room, just not enough for him to saftely lay there, IMO. And he refuses to lay on the seat. He'll sit on the seat until I get going, and I can't turn around to make him sit on the seat [as i'm driving], he'll lay down on the floor. Is it safe for him to be on the floor? I feel like is not, what can I do to keep him on the seat without a seat belt? Also, he's found ways to get onto the floor in the old car, with a seatbelt on. Also, are seat belts for dogs even a good thing to use? I really want to see a debate on seat belts for dogs!! But not in this topic! |

I think the floor is probably safer than the seat. He's down low so that if anything happens, he won't be as likely to fly against the window or over the seat. But a seat belt would be safest, or a big crate. Congrats on your new car. I'm sure you and he will figure it out, once he's comfortable with the newness of it.

Thank you
I'msure once he's comfy he'll be fine on the seat, no problems. Any suggestions on types of seat belts for doggies?? He's got a really deep chest, like a [grey] hound, and when I get it to fit there, it doesn't fit around his waist. They need like a small-medium, or something. I've tried the Gental Rider, and one that has like a chest pad thinkie. |

You get simply get the "Seatbelts" that hook on to a harness, you might be able to find a harness that fits him easier that the whole seat belt....
http://www.petsmart.com/global/produ...=1115927708720 That is just one example...my parents alway used them for the pugs but now she got a Pet Tube....the link it below...she didn't get it off of this website but I only found that one to show you. It will keep him from flying anywhere if you get in an accident or have to slam on your breaks... http://www.petplanet.co.uk/product.a...151&co=tiscali |

Never seen a "Pet Tube". How does that work? It looks like it's just loose in the seat, but I'm sure there must be some way of keeping it in place so it doesn't roll off the seat. How does it attach to the car seat belt? Is the dog also fastened inside the tube?

I've brought him in and tried on the seat belts they had in stock, at petsmart. The one I had was called Easy Rider
[http://www.petsmart.com/global/produ...1115996567840] This is the one I currently have http://www.petsmart.com/global/produ...=1115996567801 The pet Tube sounds interesting. I've never heard of that. How does it stay on the seat? How much in US money? |

I will call my mom and ask her all those questions later today. I know the animal is not restricted by something inside the tube besides the tube itself. It will keep them from flying all over the car in the event of an accident. Most pet seatbelts allow slack so the dog can get comfortable but not fly all over. I will post later today with the other answers.

I use a handy carrier that zips togather like a tent for my schnauzer. It has windows that you can open to let breeze through. It fits just right in the back seat, and in my opinion is a safe alternative to a seatbelt. We do a lot of traveling so it also works great as a crate. It folds right up and is very portable.

It looks like a collapsible laundry basket
. I don't think it was meant as a protective device, it just keeps the dog from moving around (especially if she's like my female Pit who jumps from front to back seat non-stop) and hurting himself when you make sudden stops. Don't know if it'll protect the dog in a car crash. But the dog looks comfy... |

I know it's not super safe, but for chloe it's a comfortable way for her to ride and I'm confident that it would at least keep her from flying through the windshield in an accident. She refuses to sit in the chair thing that I bought that attatches to the seatbelt.
I was running out of options. |
