When Mother and Son re-unite
Bingo, my mutt, is 8 months old. He was born in Oct. 2004 and around December, the owner (my Aunt's neighbor) gave me the pup and he was taken away from his mother. Last week, I was going to drive over to my Aunt's, and I thought it'd be a good idea to bring Bingo to his mother..so I decided to take along Bingo because I wanted to see how he would react with his mother and brother who still lives next door to my Aunt's. After about 30mins. of driving... and a backseat with drool (He gets carsick)..I finally made it. The original owner was really glad to see Bingo, he said he'd grown up so much, and is fatter than his brothers. Then he brought out Pok-Pok..Bingo's mother. Bingo approached her, they sniffed eachother, and just when it seemed like a happy reunion..the mother lashed out at Bingo and made an attempt to attack him. She was pretty angry. The brother who was behind a fence sniffed Bingo, n they just sniffed eachother, n didnt do anything. They got along much better.
Question: Anyone ever experience something like this? Do mother and son usually recognize eachother? or do they just forget about eachother? |

Unleash The Possibilities

You brought an "strange" adult dog into another dog's territory. Since I don't know how your pup reacted to the older dog (and vice versa), I can't know exactly what cause the confrontation. But usually, a young pup, whose "puppy ticket" has expired, just makes a doggie faux pax and torques off the adult dog. Maybe the pup just got in the older dog's face, was over exhuberant, jumped on her, or maybe made some rude doggie gesture likestiff tail, stiff posture, head over shoulder, attempt to mount). Usually, it's just lack of proper dog etiquette that gets older pups in trouble.

I don't think dogs recognize their siblings and mother like we do if they're "reunited". To her, Bingo was another dog on her territory, and she was making it known.
That's just my best guess... but there could have been something that we never saw. Sometimes a dog's body language is so discrete, it's hard to tell why a dog goes after another. |

Last year I had OC's mum for the summer to train for the breeder and he would've been around 1.5years old and they did NOT recognize eachother! Ocean pretty much ignored OC the whole time and OC pestered her for play a lot. I think Poc Poc was just reacting to Bingo like she would with any other strange dog

Yeah, they probably just didnt recognize eachother. Actually, when Bingo and his mother were face to face, Bingo had his head down a little bit, then they started to sniff eachother for a second..face to face. Then they stood still for about 2 seconds..then she barked and lunged forward just enough to scare bingo away. Well, at least i know not to do any more "happy" reunions anymore
